Trio involved in Monday Home Invasion-Robbery jailed on high-bail, or no bail...
The three main actors involved in this past Monday's "targeted" home invasion-robbery in Jamestown are now jailed with high-bail... or no bail.  City police say 47 year-old William Buckley... 29 year-old Joneece Talley... and, 34 year-old Joshua Ryan... were arraigned in city court Thursday on charges including first-degree robbery... first-degree burglary... first-degree criminal use of a firearm... second-degree menacing...  and fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon.  Officials say Buckley... who has two or more prior Felony Convictions... is jailed without bail.  They add that Talley and Ryan were also sent to the Chautauqua CountyJail on $500,000 bail... or $1-million property bond.  City police say the trio alleged tied a 73 year-old woman to a chair... and, assaulted her while stealing property from her house.  The woman was hurt... but, is expected to recover from what police are calling "a horrifying act of violence against an elderly victim." 

Roads reopen in Buffalo following blizzard...
Roads have reopened in storm-besieged Buffalo as authorities continue searching for people who may have died or remain stranded after last week's blizzard.  Mayor Byron Brown announced that the driving ban in New York's second-most-populous city was lifted just after midnight Thursday.  He says significant progress has been made on snow removal, but he's still asking residents not to drive if they don't have to.  Suburban roads, major highways and Buffalo-Niagara International Airport had already reopened.  At least 40 deaths have been reported in western New York from the blizzard that raged Friday and Saturday.

Dolce highlights funding doled out from ARPA monies in 2022...
The Jamestown City Council worked hard in 2022 to "touch" all areas of city government and other areas with American Rescue Plan Act funding.  In fact... the vast majority of the $28-million awarded to the city was doled out this past year... and, Council President Tony Dolce reflected on that at the panel's recent year-end voting session.  Dolce says they especially wanted to help businesses and neighborhoods recover from the COVID-19 pandemic...  he says the "put a lot of the money into business, and industries... as well as housing."  At the urging of some in the public... lawmakers spent a significant amount of money to beef up the police and fire departments with added manpower and equipment.  Dolce says another area they wanted to make sure to help was the Public Works Department... especially for "badly needed" equipment and vehicles.  There are still a few million dollars available to dole out in 2023.

Langworthy sworn-in ceremonially at High School alma mater...
The congressman-elect for the "new" 23rd District held a ceremonial swearing-in at his alma mater... Pine Valley Central School... Wednesday... as he prepares to take office.  Chautauqua County Court Judge David Foley administered the oath office to Buffalo-area Republican Nick Langworthy during the event Wednesday that attracted a large audience.  Following the ceremony, Langworthy spoke about the reason he choose to hold the event at the school.  He says "this community means a lot to me..." and, he wanted to show his appreciation for their support.  The Erie County Republican, who has also served as New York State GOP Chair, says he has been very busy since winning the Congressional seat in November.  He says the process has been complicated by redistricting... which has merged one district with the other.  There are now seven counties... including a significant portion of Erie County in the new 23rd District.  State Assemblymen Andy Goodell and Joe Giglio... along Seneca Nation Council member Odie Porter... spoke during the ceremony emceed by Chautauqua County Executive P.J. Wendel. 

Jamestown man arrested for allegedly stealing nearly $400 worth of merchandise from business...
A city man is accused of stealing nearly 400-dollars worth of merchandise from a business on Jamestown's northside just before Christmas.  City police were called to the scene Thursday night... Dec. 22... for a reported larceny.  On arrival... officers say they found 41 year-old Alberto Narvaez-Aponte, Jr., who matched the description of the suspect, on West 10th St. at North Main.  Police also found that Aponte had outstanding warrants from JPD.  However... once they made contact with the suspect... he led them on a brief foot chase before he was caught.  Officers say Aponte resisted arrest... and, hit one officer in the face.  He was finally taken into custody... and, police recovered the $394 in stolen merchandise.  Aponte was arrested for petty larceny... second-degree obstruction... second-degree harassment... and resisting arrest.  

Looking back on 2022: Investigators reopen Bindics Murder case...
There was a renewed push in 2022 by the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office to try and solve some unresolved cases... many dating back a decade -- or more.  The Department's Unsolved Crimes Unit was recently formed... and, in August... asked for the public's help in solving a murder case involving a Jamestown woman whose remains were found almost 16 years ago.  Yolanda Bindics was 25 years old when she disappeared on Aug. 10, 2004, and her skeletal remains were found in a desolate, wooded, area in the town of Charlotte on Sept. 10, 2006.  Sheriff Jim Quattrone says the Bindics family has been persistent in trying to get justice for Yolanda.

Police say an alleged "targeted" home invasion-robbery in Jamestown in which a 73 year-old victim was tied to a chair... and, assaulted... has led to the arrest of five people.  City police say they were called to the undisclosed location about 5:30 p.m. Monday... and, found that two subjects has forced their way into the home and tied up the victim, who was held at gun-point during the incident.  Officers say their investigation showed that 47 year-old William Buckley and 34 year-old Joshua Ryan -- both of Jamestown... and, 29 year-old Joneece Talley of Dunkirk... also stole property from the victim.  Two others face misdemeanor drug possession charges.  Police say Buckley, Talley, and Ryan are all charged with first-degree robbery... first-degree burglary... first-degree Criminal Use of a Firearm... second-degree menacing...  and fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon.  Buckley, Ryan and Talley were all arraigned today... with Buckley -- who is a predicate Felony -- jailed without bail.  Talley and Ryan are jailed on $500,000 bail, $1,000,000 property bond.  City police call it a "horrifying act of violence against an elderly victim who... although injured... is expected to make a full recovery." 

Fire in Hartfield remains under investigation...
Heavy damage is being reported from an early afternoon house fire in the Hartfield area Wednesday.  However... no injuries were reported in the blaze at 6441 Hartfield-Centrailia Rd.  Hartfield firefigthers were called to the scene just after 1:30 p.m., and, found the structure fully-engulfed in flames.  Nine other mutual aid companies were called to assist at the scene.  Chautauqua County Fire Dispatchers say the owner called in the alarm... and, said everyone had gotten out of the home safely.  The county's fire investigation team was called in... but, has not yet determined the cause.

Sempolinski touts passage of his "21st Century Assistive Technology Act" legislation...
Local Congressman Joe Sempolinski has less than a week to go in his short... four-month term in the House... but, says he may have saved the best for last.  Sempolinski was a co-sponsor ot the "21st Century Assistive Technology Act..." which he says it designed to protect and "lift up" Americans with disabilities.  The Steuben County Republican says it's part of the National Defense Authorization Act approved this week.  Sempolinski says he worked with a Democratic Congressman Mark DeSaulnier of California to craft the bill.  He says there's also supporting legislation for it in the Omnibus spending bill... that promotes awareness and research of other similar disabilities.  Sempolinski says his daughter "Jo Jo" -- who has Down Syndrome -- was his inspiration for the bill.  He says since he has the "profound honor and ability to impact people's lives" -- he wanted to take the lead and use that power to help those "in that community."  He says "when I see what this bill does for those living with disabilities and the profound effect it will have on their lives, I know that we made a serious difference." 

Sempolinski "very disappointed" in Congressman-elect George Santos over lies, embellishments over his work and personal background...
A Long Island Congressman-elect who has admitted to lying about his work and personal background is coming under fire for misleading the voters in his district.  However... few Republican members of Congress have spoken out one way or the other on George Santos.  Santos has admitted to lying or embellishing about being Jewish... and, having grandparents who escaped the Holicaust in World War II.  Outgoing local Congressman Joe Sempolinski says he only met Santos once -- briefly -- and says he's "very disappointed" in the fellow Republican.  However... he says there's little that can be done, aside from Santos himself stepping down.  

Jamestown woman arrested for drug possession and Busti warrant...
A city woman has been arrested for allegedly being found in possession of narcotics in Jamestown... and, on a warrant in the town of Busti.  City police were called to report of a "suspicious vehicle" on Jamestown's northside shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday... and, found 39 year-old Elizabeth Asher in the car.  Officers say Asher had a confirmed warrant issued by Lakewood-Busti Police... and, she was arrested.  Police say they found Asher in possession of Methamphetamine and Suboxone.... and, she was additionally charged with two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  She was arraigned and issued appearance tickets before being turned over to Lakewood-Busti Police.

Look back on 2022: Fatal fire kills Jamestown man...
There was a fatal fire early in the year in the city of Jamestown... as a 19 year-old man died of injuries suffered in the blaze on the city's southside.  Two people in all were hurt... while two others escaped injury in a fire that gutted the two-story home at 109 Kidder Street.  City Fire Battalion Chief Roger Sigular told us at the scene that crews were called to the scene shortly before 2 PM on Feb. 4, and, were also told people were trapped inside.  Sigular says fire on the first floor spread quickly to the second-floor.  Jamestown Police Captain Bob Samuelson says the two victims taken to UPMC Chautauqua Hospital were the 19 year-old man, and a 3-year-old boy.  Both were undergoing emergency treatment.  One other person was unaccounted for initially... but, later found safe.  It's one of the stories making news in 2022... and, we'll present our Top 10 on this weekend's "Community Spotlight" program.

Five people arrested for alleged home invasion, and assault in Jamestown...
Five people have been arrested in connection with a home invasion robbery in which a 73 year-old victim was tied to a chair... and, assaulted while they stole property inside the home.  City police say they were called to the undisclosed scene about 5:30 p.m. Monday... and, found that two subjects had forced their way into the home and tied up the victim, who was held at gun-point during the incident.  Officers say their investigation showed that 47 year-old William Buckley and 34 year-old Joshua Ryan -- both of Jamestown... and, 29 year-old Joneece Talley of Dunkirk... were responsible for the home invasion.  Two others... 33 year-old Cameron Strasser... and, 28 year-old Ryan Gifford of Jamestown... were also on-scene and charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  Police say Buckley, Talley, and Ryan are all charged with first-degree robbery... first-degree burglary... first-degree criminal use of a firearm... second-degree menacing... fourth-degree conspiracy... and fourth degree criminal possession of a weapon.  Buckley is also charged with drug possession and, obstruction.  All five were jailed pending arraignment.  

Man treated for leg wound following shooting incident in Jamestown...
Jamestown Police are continuing to investigate a mid-evening shooting incident on the city's southside last night that left one person with a leg wound.  City police say they were called to the scene at Newland Avenue and Park Street about 9 p.m.  A JPD Sergeant tells us the victim was taken to UPMC Chautauqua Hospital by a private vehicle for treatment of a leg wound... and, he was later released.  However... police say the man has not been cooperative with their investigation.  More when it becomes available.

Wendel reports county involved in helping Erie Co. with blizzard response...
Chautauqua County is providing help to it's neighbor to the north as the Buffalo-area begins digging out out from what many are calling the "blizzard of the century."  That from County Executive P.J. Wendel... who says says several fire departments are ready to assist, including one local department.  Wendel says Forestville has now been deployed to the area... and the others are on stand-by.  As for our county... Wendel says we were fortunate to escape with just a few inches of snow as opposed to four-feet in the Buffalo-area.  However... Wendel says there was a lot of electrical infrastructure damage caused by the strong winds along the lake shore from Barcelona Harbor to Sunset Bay... and, that had to be replaced.  He adds it's the fourth-year in a row there's been this kind of damage in that part of the county.  

State and Millitary Police sent to Buffalo to enforce driving ban...
Officials in New York say state and military police were sent to keep people from driving in snow-choked Buffalo.  The Erie County executive said Tuesday that police are being positioned at entrances to Buffalo and at major intersections to enforce a ban on driving.  Officials say now that some 35 people have died in the region.  That's in addition to about two dozen other deaths the huge storm caused around the country.  And an emergency services commissioner in the Buffalo area says crews are keeping an eye on warmer weather forecast for later in the week that could bring a threat of flooding as the snow melts.

Huge contribution from foundation help's Salvation Army smash Red Kettle Campaign goal...
The Salvation Army of Jamestown found itself in a dire situation late last week.  It's Red Kettle Campaign had only brought in $80,000... and, was suspended late in the week due to the weather.  However... thanks to the generosity of a local foundation... they not only beat their $115,000 goal... but, smashed it.  Major Kim Merchant told the story on our Dennis Webster Show Tuesday morning... saying they received an e-mail from the Carnahan Founation last week that informed them that the foundation would be contributing $120,000 to the campaign on behalf of benefactor David Carnahan, and his wife.  That means the campaign brought in a record $200,000.  However... Merchant says a lot of the extra money will likely be eaten up by inflationary costs in the coming year.  She says... while the contribution was unexpected... the fact it came from the Carnahan's was not.  Merchant says David Carnahan was a 53-year member of their board.

Gasoline prices down again in Jamestown-area...
Gasoline prices in the Jamestown-area continue to drop during the holiday season... with the price falling 16-cents since the beginning of last week.  That from AAA East Central’s Gas Price Report... which has the price at just under $3.70 a gallon for regular, unleaded gas.  That's still 15-cents higher than last year at this time.  The price is also still well above the national average of $3.10.  That's 4-cents less than last week.  The Energy Information Administration reports that gasoline demand has increased slightly.  Higher demand, coupled with fluctuating oil prices, could cause pump price decreases to become smaller as the year ends. 
 

City man arrested for having loaded, .38-caliber gun in his possession without State Permit...
A Jamestown man has been arrested for allegedly being found in possession of a loaded, .38-caliber revolver he did not have a state permit for.  City police were called to a location at Eagle and Scioto Streets shortly after 5 a.m. Monday on a weapon's complaint.  On arrival... officers say they found 23 year-old Christian Jewell... and, gave him several verbal commands -- which he refused to follow.  However... police were able to take Jewell into custody, and recover the loaded pistol.  Jewell was found not to have a pistol permit... and was arrested for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and, second-degree obstructing governmental administration.  Jewell was jailed pending arraignment.

Jamestown man arrested after police pursuit in stolen pick-up truck...
A Jamestown man faces several Felony charges following a Christmas Day vehicle pursuit that started on the city's northside and ended in the Fluvanna area.  City police were called to a business at North Main and West Ninth Sts. about Noon Sunday to investigate a Ford pick-up truck reported stolen in the town of Ellicott.  Officers say when they arrived... they saw 31 year-old Joseph James get into the vehicle... and, drive off.  They say James refused to pull over... and, police began the pursuit... which went west on Fluvanna Avenue and out of the city.  Officers say the driver lost control of the truck... and, it struck a building just over the city line.  Officers say James then tried to flee again by hitting a Jamestown patrol car several times... and, then striking a second patrol car... and, almost hitting an officer.  The pursuit ended after the truck crashed into a ditch.  Police took James into custody on charges including first-degree reckless endangerment... third-degree criminal possession of stolen property... and, two counts of third-degree fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle.

Sempolinski says his Dist. Offices have dealt with more than 300 constituent services cases, so far...
Local Congressman Joe Sempolinski's district offices have handled just over 300 constituent service cases during the three-and-a-half months he's been in office.  Sempolinski... who's a former district director for former Rep. Tom Reed... made getting constituent services going again was among his top priorities after being elected to fill out Reed's term.  The Steuben County Republican says he recently met with his district staff to go over some of their accomplishments, and making sure that they are handling those constituent calls right up until they are served by Nick Langworthy in the "new" 23rd District... or Claudia Tenney or Marc Molinaro, who each are getting small portions of the current 23rd District.  Sempolinski says that "whistle" will sound next Monday, Jan. 2.  Langworthy will be sworn-in on Tuesday, Jan. 3 in Washington.  Sempolinski says, fortunately, most of Reed's district staff stayed on with him... and, that's been a big help.  All of Chautauqua County will be in the new 23rd District. 

Reed abruptly resigns from Congress in May, setting up up the area to have three different members of Congress within months of each other... one of 2022's top stories...
One of the major stories of 2022 was the sudden resignation of six-term local Congressman Tom Reed... who was already not seeking re-election in November.  Reed made the announcement on the House Floor on May 11, saying that he hoped “to have a greater impact on the country.”  The Corning Republican said he was joining a lobbying firm.  One of Reed's last actions in the House was to deal with getting a budget in place... much of which he agreed with in terms of improving infrastructure, and, expanding rural broadband.  However... the federal budget battles would heat up again later in the year... with current Congressman Joe Sempolinski opposing both two continuing resolutions... and, a recently approved Omnibus spending bill.  The 23rd Congressional District went without representation until early September... following a special election won by Sempolinski over Democrat Max Della Pia.  However... Sempolinski is only serving until Jan. 3, when Republican Nick Langworthy will be sworn-in to represent the "new" 23rd District in Congress.  More on the big stories of 2022 all this week, and on this coming weekend's "Community Spotlight" program.

Fredonia man arrested following DWI accident in Pomfret...
A north county man has been arrested for drunk driving following a single-car accident on Van Buren Road in the town of Pomfret Monday afternoon.  Sheriff's deputies were called to the scene shortly before 5 p.m., and, found that the driver of the car, 58 year-old Donald Salemi of Fredonia, had been drinking and driving.  Officers arrested Salemi for DWI... and moving from lane unsafely.  He was issued appearance tickets for Pomfret Town Court.  No one was hurt in the crash.

Humane Society announces extension of "Season of Hope" pet adoption drive...
The Chautauqua County Humane Society has extended it's "Season of Hope" adoption drive to this Friday, Dec. 30.  The Humane Society's drive... presented by Happy Hounds Hotel and Day Spa... has a goal to get 100 animals into loving homes through adoption... or fostering.  Senior Programs Director Brian Papalia says "Before the storm started interfering with everyone’s lives last week, we had a total of 75 animals move on to their forever homes."  Brian says they adopted out 60... and, 15 went into the CCHS Foster Program.  This week... he says they are doing something special, with all adoption fees half-off in hopes of reaching their goal of 100 animals new homes.  Stop by the Adoption Center at 2825 Strunk Rd. in Jamestown during lobby hours for cat adoptions from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays and Fridays... and, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. 

Man from Buffalo arrested for possession of large number of illegal drugs during traffic stop in Jamestown...
A Buffalo man has been arrested following a traffic stop on Jamestown's southside that turned up a large number of illegal drugs... including just under 200 pills.  City police conducted a traffic stop at Barker and South Main Street last week for a car that only had one headlight working.  Officers say they found the driver... 25 year-old Haitham Kassem... in possession of 125 Oxycodone Hydrochloride pills... 48 Clonazepam pills, and a quantity of Methamphetamine.  While taking Kassem to the city jail... he allegedly tried to conceal 1.7-grams of Fentanyl in the back seat of the patrol car which was found by officers.  Police charged him with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... Felony tampering with Physical Evidence... and two counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a Controlled Substance.  He's also charging with operating a motor vehicle with One Headlight... and, was jailed pending arraignment.

Mandatory evacuation from storm in north county along Lake Erie lifted over weekend...
A brief mandatory evacuation of residents in Silver Creek, Hanford Bay and Sunset Bay was lifed by mid-day Saturday.  That from County Executive P.J. Wendel... who announced the evacuation order due to high waters caused by gale force winds along Lake Erie that began with the blizzard early last Friday morning.  In addition.. Sheriff Jim Quattrone announced late Saturday that the Travel Advisory for Chautauqua County has been lifted.  However... the State of Emergency for all parts of the county -- north of Route 5 -- remains in effect through today.  County officials also urged residents that return to their homes to use caution, and to ensure their vehicles are not parked on the street. 

BPU approves increase in trash collection rates in 2023...
Jamestown Board of Public Utilities' Solid Waste Division customers will see an increase in costs in 2023... but, officials say it's a minimal increase.  Mayor Eddie Sundquist... who serves as BPU President by virtue of his office... says the board approved the $1.50 monthly increase as part of it's 2023 budget at it's December meeting.  Sundquist adds, though, that if you recycle... that increase will be lower, at $1 a month.  He says the reasons for the increase is increased labor costs... and the cost for disposing of the waste.  BPU General Manager Dave Leathers says line item costs are rising... and some of them are "significant.”  Among the increased costs are tipping fees at the Chautauqua County Landfill... and, fuel expenses.

While there will be no increase in electric rates in 2023... the BPU may begin looking at one in 2023 or 2024.  Officials say some of the contributing factors include inflation of natural gas and electric prices, and state legislation like the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.  For 2023...  water rates are expected to go up 3-percent.  However... there will be no change for Wastewater in the coming year.

Man arrested for late Christmas Eve assault...  
A man has been arrested in Jamestown for allegedly assaulting another man during an altercation on Christmas Eve.  City police were called to a southside address just after 11:30 p.m. Saturday... and, spoke with both 34 year-old Ruben Planas... and, the male victim.  Officers say their investigation showed that Planas had assaulted the man... and, he was taken into custody for third-degree assault.  He was jailed pending arraignment.

Attendance at Comedy Center in 2022 rebounds, but, not to pre-COVID levels yet...
The past year was a successful "rebound" year for the National Comedy Center with resumption of the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival... and, new exhibits opening.  That from Comedy Center Executive Director Journey Gunderson... who says they -- along with most entertainment venues -- were not able to return to 2019 "pre-pandemic levels."  However... Gunderson says they had a very good start to the year... with Comedianne Amy Poehler unveiling her documentary program about Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.  Late this year... she was appointed to the center's national advisory board.  While attendance at the Comedy Center has not returned to pre-pandemic levels... they did host the first, in-person Lucille Ball Comedy Festival since the pandemic this past August.  Gunderson says that was well-attended.  She says that included three "sell-out" or full headiner shows for Jeff Foxworthy and the Legends of Saturday Night Live.  That's in addition to other programming they had for the festival.  Gunderson made her comments for this past weekend's Community Spotlight program on the six Media One Radio Group stations.

U.S. Senators from NYS announce local, regional funding in Omnibus Bill...
Just under half-a-million dollars has been earmarked to help purchase and renovate a building for a new town hall in the north county town of Pomfret.  The $440,000 is part of $14-million in project funding in Western New York in the $1.7-trillion Omnibus spending bill for next year.  That from New York Senators Charles Schumer... and, Kirsten Gillibrand... who say the Pomfret project will allow for the purchase and renovation to an existing, vacant building to help address the current lack of space for the town's functions.  

Warren Co. Commissioners announce no tax increase budget proposal...
Warren County, Pennsylvania commissioners have -- for the third straight year -- released a balanced budget with no tax increase.  Commissioners say the 2023 budget... which will be voted on Dec. 28 at their Noon meeting... maintains the 21.75-milage rate of the previous year while making strategic capital investments that will help strengthen the county government. 

Chautauqua County now under Blizzard Warning through 7 a.m. Sunday...
The National Weather Services has now issued a Blizzard Warning for Chautauqua County through 7 a.m. this Sunday after we were under just a Winter Storm Warning through early Monday morning.  Forecasters say total snow accumulations -- with strong winds and bitterly cold temperatures -- are now expected to be 1 to 2 feet in the most persistant snow areas.  It's all from the huge Winter Storm that's been barreling across the United States... and, is bringing frigid cold and wind chills... and, several inches of snow.  However... Foecasters say the immediate Jamestown-area won't likely see as much snow as areas along the Lake Erie Shoreline into the Buffalo-area will see.  and Niagara Frontier.  That from Forecaster Kirk Apfell with the National Weather Service in Buffalo... who says we'll see those higher amounts in the western and northern parts of the county.  Apfel says the winds will gust between 50 and 60 mph through Saturday morning... bringing wind chills to at least 10 to 20 below zero.  The State Thruway has issued a travel ban for tandem and empty trucks from the Pennsylvania state line to Exit 46 in Henrietta for the duration of the storm.

Hochul issues State of Emergency for NYS...
New York Governor Kathy Hochul has declared a State of Emergency in advance of the storm system making it's way into our area today.  Late Thursday... Hochul said the system forecast to bring a mixed bag of hazards across the state now through next Monday.  Hochul says heavy rain, and snow... strong winds, coastal and lakeshore flooding and flash freezing are all possible in various regions across the state throughout the holiday weekend.  In addition, lake effect snow is expected to impact areas along Lakes Erie and Ontario beginning Friday night and continuing into Monday with total snow accumulations forecast to reach up to three feet.  From this point on... Hochul is advising anyone looking to travel wait to do so until Monday.

County offices to close early, and court proceedings go on-line for today...
With the approaching Winter Storm moving into the area... Chautauqua County government offices will be closing early today.  That from County Executive P.J. Wendel... who says "considering the upcoming winter storm and keeping the safety of our employees and clients in mind, we have decided to close our non-essential county government offices at Noon on Friday.  I also urge anyone who is traveling this weekend to please use caution.”  Wendel says the early closure will impact a majority of county departments... but, will not affect essential services.

Due to the impending weather conditions... the Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, and  Orleans County Courts will be conducting emergency operations virtually today.  Physical access to courts in Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, and Orleans County Court facilities will be curtailed.  The court system says... with the exception of criminal court arraignments and any emergency criminal matters... emergency matters will be handled virtually.  Regularly scheduled calendars are adjourned. 

Two city residents arrested for drug possession, and stealing BPU water services...
Two Jamestown residents have been arrested for alleged drug possession... and, stealing water services from the city's Board of Public Utilities.  City police say the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force... with the help of the JPD SWAT Team... executed a search warrant at 23 Glenview Ave. Wednesday afternoon.  Inside... they found 31 year-old Matthew Buck and 35 year-old Andrea Robbins... along with a small quantity of methamphetamine and drug ledgers.  Further investigation led to detectives contacting the BPU to inspect the water meter.  It was found that the meter had been tampered with and broken.  Police say the home had been getting water without a reading for an unknown period of time... and, the pair had not paid for water since it had been shut-off.  Officers took Buck and Robbins to the city jail on charges of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, theft of services.  Police also requested that the city's Department of Development inspect the home for housing code violations.

Legislature recognizes retiring members and county attorney... 
County lawmakers in Mayville Wednesday night recognized three members of county government who are retiring.  During their final meeting of the year... the legislature issued commendations for members Paul Whitford and Jay Gould... plus longtime County Attorney Stephen Abdella.  In reading the commendation for Whitford... Legislature Chairman Pierre Chagnon said the Jamestown Democrat has worked "tirelessly" to serve the residents of the county for the past eight years... while Gould has been on the county legislature for 23 years, including a stint as Legislature Chairman from 2012-to-2016.

Abdella is departing after 32 years of service.  In addition to being County Attorney... Abdella has served in many roles, including two occasions as Acting County Executive.  Current County Executive P.J. Wendel says Abdella will be greatly missed... and his will be tough "shoes to fill." 

Borrello votes now on state legislative pay raise... 
Chautauqua County's representative in the New York State Senate is blasting both houses of the state legislature for voting to give themselves 29% pay increases.  Sunset Bay Republican Gergoe Borrello says the $32,000 annual pay raise was approved Thursday.  Borrello says as "most New Yorkers are busy preparing to celebrate the holidays with family and friends... the Democratic majorities in the State Legislature cooked up a self-serving feast of their own in the form of a whopping pay raise."  Borrello says the pay hike means that state lawmakers will be the highest paid in the country at $142,000.  He voted no on the pay hike.

Winter Storm barreling towards WNY to bring snow mainly north, bitter cold everywhere...
The huge Winter storm barreling across the United States will make it into our area tomorrow morning... bring with it frigid cold and wind chills... and, several inches of snow.  However... the immediate Jamestown-area won't be seeing the snow they will along the Lake Erie Shoreline into the Buffalo-area and Niagara Frontier.  That from Forecaster Kirk Apfell with the National Weather Service in Buffalo... who says northern parts of the county will bring 1 to 2 feet of snow along Lake Erie... and, 3 to 5 inches in the immediate Jamestown-area.  A Winter Storm Warning has now been issued for our area... beginning at 7 a.m., when the strong cold front preceeding the storm moves into the region.  Apfel says the wind will also pick up... and, we'll see a "flash freeze" situation.  Apfel says wind gusts will be between 50 and 60 mph... and, the strongest will come between late afternoon Friday through Saturday morning.  In addition to our Winter Storm Warning... the State Thruway has issued a travel ban for tandem and emptry truck ban... starting at 6 a.m. tomorrow until further notice due to the high winds forecast.  That ban will be for I-90 from the Pennsylvania state line to Exit 46 in Henrietta.  Our complete forecast follows the news.

Man from Brocton arrested on drug and weapons charges following early morning raid...         
A Brocton man has been arrested on drug and weapons charges following a three-month investigation by police culminated with a raid on his home early this morning.  Sheriff's officers say their narcotics investigators... along with Dunkirk Police and the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force executed a search warrant just after 5 a.m. at Lot 36 at 133 Lake Ave. in the north county village.  Police made entry into the home... where three people were found inside... and, arrested 29 year-old Marcus Carrizales.  A search of the home turned up 6.2-grams of fentanyl, 6 dosage units of Suboxone, scales and packaging material for narcotics sales, a .22 cal. rifle, a high-capacity magazine and $5,900 in cash.  Carrizales was charged with Felony third-degree criminal possession of a Controlled Substance... along with fourth and seventh-degree criminal possession.  He was also charged with Felony third and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon.  Carrizales was taken to the county jail pending arraignment.  If you have any information about suspicious or drug-related activity in your area... call the Sheriff’s Office Tip line at either 800-344-8702 or 664-2420... or the Jamestown Police Tip line at 483-8477.

Two Mayville residents arrested during drug raid...         
Two Mayville residents have been arrested for allegedly trafficking drugs during a raid on their home that turned up multiple illegal narcotics... and, cash proceeds.  Chautauqua County Sheriff's deputies say the department's SWAT Team helped execute a search warrant at 107 Valley St. shortly after 6 a.m. Wednesday morning.  Officers say their two-month long investigation resulted in the arrests of 47 year-old Jenell Long and 33 year-old James Mawhir.  Police say they found quantities of Fentanyl... Oxycodone... Alprazolam... and Clonazepam... along with scales and packaging materials and the cash.  Both are charged with third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... three counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, second-degree criminally using drug paraphernalia.  Both were jailed pending arraignment.  Two other people inside the residence were not charged. 

Gillibrand announces additional $5-billion in LIHEAP funding for lower-income residents to help pay for Winter heating...
Momentum toward passing the $1.7-trillion omnibus funding bill with more aid for Ukraine has slowed considerably as lawmakers struggle to reach an agreement on amendments to the bill.  New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand confirmed Thursday that amendments were being made to the bill... which will also include about $5-billion more for the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program... or LIHEAP.  Gillibrand says that's in addition to $1-billion in added funding this past September through the LIHEAP Grant Program, and the federal Infrastructure bill.  Gillibrand says natural gas is projected to increase 28% this Winter... while home heating oil is up 27%... and, electric is up by 10% over last Winter.  An agreement on the amendments would speed the process along and allow lawmakers to avoid a partial government shutdown at midnight Friday.  The impasse came just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought to assure lawmakers during a joint meeting of Congress that the aid the U.S. is providing is much appreciated and could "speed up" a Ukrainian victory.

County Legislature approves increase in Management Salary Ranges...
Chautauqua County lawmakers have unanimously approved a local law that increases the salary range for several county managers.  The measure passed by a 17-0 vote during Wednesday evening's legislature meeting in Mayville.  Dunkirk Democrat Robert Bankoski, one of the co-sponsors of the local law, says the pay hike is needed because the county is having a hard time filling certain positions... and some have gone more than a year without being filled.  County Human Resources Director Deborah Makowski clarified that six managers would need to get a raise in order to reach their new salary range... and, that would result in an immediate cost of nearly $10,000 for the county.  Jamestown lawmaker Elizabeth Rankin abstained from voting on the local law because her husband would be affected.  One other lawmaker was absent from the meeting.

County Legislature to vote on increasing salary ranges for managers...
Chautauqua County lawmakers will be taking up a local law that would increase salary ranges for county managers.  Legislature Minority Leader Bob Bankoski says the pay hike being acted on tonight is needed... to draw potential workers to the county.  Bankowski says... in some instances... they've had positions remain unfilled for a year's time.  In those cases... they've had to combine some positions.  Bankoski says there should be bipartisan support for the local law.  He says it will only cost about $11,000 more in spending for the coming year.  The legislature tonight will also recognize retiring County Attorney Stephen Abdella at his final meeting.

Major Winter Storm continuing to move towards region in time for Christmas...
A major winter storm is forecast to reach the Eastern United States right before Christmas... and, the National Weather Service has now issued a Winter Storm Watch for the area -- beginning Friday morning.  Forecaster Phillip Pandolfo in Buffalo says the Jamestown area will see a number of potential hazzards with this system... adding a big drop in temperatures will be seen first as we go through the day Friday.  Pandolfo says highs will drop from the 40's on Friday to the single digits by Saturday, creating the potential for icy conditions in a  'flash freeze' -- and then some snow.  He says we should see a "few inches" of snow Friday into Saturday.  He says the other big hazard will be the wind... which could gust to 40 mph or higher.  Pandolfo says that will lead to limited visibility with blowing and drifting snow at times through the entire weekend.  The Winter Storm Watch begins at 7 a.m. Friday... and continues through 7 a.m. next Monday, Dec. 26. 

Sempolinski says he will vote "no" on $1.7-trillion omnibus spending bill...
Final details are still being hashed out... but, Congress is inching closer to voting on a new, $1.7-trillion omnibus spending bill that will fund the federal government through next October.  However... local Congressman Joe Sempolinski says he will not be voting for the proposal... which needs to be approved by Friday.  That's when the current, one-week extension runs out.  However... Sempolinski says this proposal will do more harm than good heading into the future.  He says it will cause more inflation, and the "outrageous" spending in it is "dangerous."  Sempolinski says the more than 4,000 page document was released early Tuesday morning... and, says it's the product of a "very flawed process."  The Steuben County Republican voted against the one-week continuing resolution last week.  The omnibus bill goes to the U.S. Senate -- possibly tonight -- for action there before making it's way to the House of Representatives.  Sempolinski made his comments during his weekly telephone conference call with regional media.

Restore-NY funds being awarded to four North County projects...
There are four projects in northern Chautauqua County will receive a share of Restore-NY funding from the state.  One of them is $1-million for the city of Dunkirk’s Central Avenue Transformation Project, which will involve restoring vacant properties in the 400 block of Central Avenue.  Mayor Willie Rosas calls it "wonderful news" for the city.  The other projects include $1.5-million for the Welch's Building in Westfield, $1.25-million for the White Inn Restoration Project in Fredonia, and $1-million for the Silver Creek Senior School Apartments.  County Executive P.J. Wendel says the county is involved in those three projects... and, adds the Silver Creek building has been vacant since being shut-down by the district in the late 1970s.  Wendel adds they don't want to see that happen with the White Inn or the Welch's buildings.  The funding was announced Tuesday by Governor Kathy Hochul.

Jamestown man arrested for harassment and criminal mischief...
A city man sought on a warrant in Dunkirk has now been arrested for allegedly threatening to kill a person on Jamestown's southside late last Sunday.  City police responded to a call for a "suspicious person" shortly before 10 p.m., and, learned on arrival that 28 year-old Trea Buchanan had tried to kick open the victim's door.  Officers then located Buchanan on the porch of the home.  Upon further investigation... officers found that Buchanan had threatened to kill the victim and had tried to kick in the person's door.  He was arrested for second-degree harassment... and, fourth-degree criminal mischief.  Buchanan was jailed pending arraignment.

Salvation Army of Jamestown looking for "Christmas Miracle" to meet Red Kettle goal...
There are only four days left in the Salvation Army of Jamestown's 2022 Red Kettle Campaign... but, the effort so far has only raised about half of this year's goal.  That from Major Kim Merchant... who says part of the reason may be there's not as many "in-person" shoppers this year.  However... Merchant says they're hoping for a Christmas Miracle before 6 p.m. this Saturday... and, they can meet their $115,000 goal.  On our Dennis Webster Show Tuesday... she noted that there was a time when more kettles were in higher trafficked areas.  The money raised helps the Salvation Army's support it's local programming.  Merchant says there are variety of ways to give... in addition to putting money in the kettles.  She says there is a 'QR' Code you can scan at the kettles.  You can also give by texting "Jamestownkettle" to 51555... or you can send a check to the Salvation Army of Jamestown at 83 South Main Street.  If you can ring the bells... call them at 664-4108.

NWS previews Winter storm, and big temperature drop later in week...

City council approves local laws for video conferencing and new ward boundary lines...
City lawmakers in Jamestown have approved two local laws... one setting new ward boundary lines... and the other allowing all city-related meetings to be video conferenced.  The City Council approved both measures at last night's voting session 9-0.  Council President Tony Dolce says the Redistricting panel tried to make as few changes as possible from the current maps.  Dolce, who represents the second-ward, noted a conversation he had with first-ward Councilman Brent Sheldon, joking about him giving Sheldon "back" two streets that were put into the second-ward 10 years ago.  Dolce says the video conferencing law allows city government meetings to be live-streamed... something New York state allowed during the COVID-19 Pandemic.  He says the local law "codifies" what the city has been doing since that time.  Mayor Eddie Sundquist will hold a public hearing on both local laws a week from this Wednesday... on Dec. 28.  The law regarding video conferencing will be held in council chambers at 4:45 p.m., and the one regarding redistricting will take place at 5 p.m.

City lawmakers approve Maycock as Acting Comptroller...
The city of Jamestown is losing it's second comptroller within just a few months.  The city council last night approved the mayor's appointment of Deputy Comptroller Catie Maycock as Jamestown's Acting Comptroller with John Sellstrom leaving the position.  Mayor Eddie Sundquist says Maycock now has the public and private sector experience to handle the post temporarily.  Sundquist says she came to city government from the private sector just over three months ago... and, will help with the transition to a new tax year in 2023.  Maycock is not able to fill the City Comptroller's position full-time because she's not a city resident.  Sellstrom had been Financial Advisor for the Jamestown Urban Renewal Agency when he was brought on to replace Ryan Thompson... who left about mid-year for a position in the private sector.

Salary Review Commission recommends increases for both mayor and city council positions in Jamestown...
The Jamestown City Council will consider a local law in early 2023 that would increase the mayor's and council salaries at the beginning of the next term.  During last week's work session... Salary Review Commission members Tage Hall and Patrick Smeraldo presented their recommendations... and, background on how they got there.  Hall, who served as chairman, says panel members agreed unanimously to the increases they came up with... noting that they are sensitive "to the fact that raising salaries is never really popular..." but, some kind of increase is "long overdue."  Those increases would take the mayor's salary from $72,000 a year to a range of $80,000 to $90,000 a year.  Members said the Council President's salary would go from $6,000 to $9,000... and, individual council members would increase from $5,000 to $7,500. 

NYS Climate Action Scoping Plan approved by climate council....
New York's Climate Action Council has approved the state's final scoping plan... which leaders say creates a "roadmap" to meet climate leadership and Community Protection Act requirements.  Co-Chairmen, Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority President and CEO Doreen Harris, Monday announced the panel approved the document, 19-3.  They say the document... which was developed through hearings the past three-years... outlines recommended policies and actions to help meet the goals and requirements of the nation-leading Climate Act.  The co-chairs say the scoping plan is now available to the public... and, will be submitted to the Governor and the state legislature by next Jan. 1.  Local State Senator George Borrello blasted the move... saying the state "has taken another step away from the affordable and reliable sources of energy that power homes, businesses and automobiles across our state and towards an energy future clouded by unknown costs and questionable benefits."

Wendel says Ferrero Group talked a lot about "prospects for expansion" in acquiring Wells Enterprises...
What does the recent announcement of the Ferrero Group's acquisition of Wells Enterprises mean for the city of Dunkirk and Chautauqua County?  County Executive P.J. Wendel says county officials reached out to company officials recently to get more information about the acquisition... and, had a meeting just last week with them, and officials from U.S. Senator Charles Schumer's Office.  Wendel also indicated that a future expansion of the plant is not being ruled out... and, says Ferrero kept reiterating there were "prospects for expansion."  The Ferrero Group's acquistion was announced late this Fall.  Back in July... Wells Enterprises announced a scaling-back operations at the Dunkirk facility in 2023.  The announcement statef that the plan would have five production lines in operation next year.  At that time... Wendel said he would be reaching out to company officials in Iowa to see how the county can assist. 
 

No one hurt in house fire in Ashville...
A house fire late last night in Ashville has been blamed on an overloaded electrical power strip inside the home.  Sheriff's Department fire investigators say Ashille firefighters were called to the scene at 4926 Stoneledge Rd. just after 10 p.m., and, were joined by several mutual aid companies.  Investigators were called to the scene once the blaze was out... and, they determined the cause was accidental.  No damage estimate has been reported... but, officials say no one was hurt in the fire.

City man arrested for allegedly stealing, and trying to forge checks...
A Jamestown man has been arrested for allegedly trying to pass stolen checks on the westside of the city.  Jamestown police were called to the undisclosed address late last Friday afternoon for a report of fraud.  Officers say their investigation revealed that 62 year-old Wayne Selle stole the checks and tried to pass them off as his.  He was arrested for second-degree forgery... and, second-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.  Selle was jailed pending arraignment.

Serial shoplifter arrested in Dunkirk...
A Dunkirk man has been arrested for allegedly shoplifting three separate times at the T-J Maxx sore on Vineyard Drive in the town of Dunkirk.  State Police in Fredonia say they arrested 47 year-old Alexander Santiago following the latest incident last Friday.  Troopers say they found Santiago on East Courtney St. in Dunkirk... and he tried to flee.  However... police nabbed him quickly, and he was arrested for stealing $740 worth of merchandise.  He's been charged with two counts of third-degree burglary... and one count each of petty larceny and second-degree obstructing governmental administration.  Troopers say Santiago has had 49 prior arrests... and, has also been charged with 18 counts of failure to appear in court. 

Holiday Haul wraps up with 9 1/2 tons of food and supplies, and $21,000 cash...
The 10th annual Holiday Haul for St. Susan’s Center in Jamestow reached a new milestone last Saturday... as principal organizer Keith Martin pointed out to our Dennis Webster on Saturday afternoon.  For the first time, Martin says they filled up both trucks from Jamestown Mattress, and the St. Susan's Center itself.  He says a record 9 1/2 tons of food and supplies were contributed... along with $21,000 cash.  While waiting for one of the trucks to be unloaded at St. Susan’s, the Executive Director of the center, Cherie Rowland, expressed her gratitude to the community in general, and Martin and Dan Keefe.  The Holiday Haul takes place every December in front of the Jamestown Cycle Shop... with a tent from Jamestown Awning, a truck from Jamestown Mattress and publicity from Media One Radio Group.

Wreaths Across America held in Jamestown, and elsewhere...
Flags flapped in the wind as ‘Taps’ echoed across snow covered Lakeview Cemetery around noon on Saturday as some 75 volunteers gathered at Soldier’s Circle to place 400 wreaths on the graves of veterans buried there.  Todd Hanson, the Local Coordinator for Wreaths Across America, says the ceremony is poignant because it's the time of year "we need to reach out to the veteran's still here, and their families."  The volunteers were encouraged to speak the veteran’s name when placing each wreath.  Hanson says the wreaths were purchased with money donated by local citizens and businesses.

SUNY JCC named as Top 10 Community College in NYS...
SUNY Jamestown Community College has been recognized as a "Top 10" community college in New York state for providing an "affordable, and attainable education."  The honor was announced late last week by intelligent.com... which provides 'unbiased' research to help students make informed decisions about higher education.  It also identifies top schools based on tuition costs, number of credits required to graduate, and online coursework delivery format.  JCC was 7th overall in the rankings... which also compares each school's admission practices, retention and graduation rates, among others.  The intelligent.com study also named JCC as the 'Best Rural Location' in it's final assessment. 

Tarp Skunks announce new director of Business Operations and Sales...
An intern for the past two seasons with the Jamestown Tarp Skunks has been named as the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball team's new Director of Business Operations and Sales.  Jamestown native Christian Dolce will direct the team's day-to-day operations... beginning next Jan. 11.  Dolce was announced as the new director during the team's annual year-end program at the Robert H. Jackson Center last Saturday.  The recent graduate of John Carroll University in Cleveland believes he's ready to take the organization to the "next level" after two "very successful seasons."  Dolce thanked outgoing Director of Business Operations and Sales, Jacob Kindberg, who will continue in an advisory capacity with the team, since he lives in Buffalo now.  He also thanked the Tarp Skunks Advisory Board... and, especially long-time member Russ Diethrick.  The team also announced the addition of a new Marketing Executive's position, which will be held by former Jamestown Jammers General Manager, Mike Ferguson.  Director of Baseball Operations and Team Manager, Jordan Basile, will also be back again in 2023.

Kindberg reflects on 2022 season during comments at RHJ...
The 2022 season for the Jamestown Tarp Skunks was a success on the field... but, also a big one for attendance and merchandising.  Past Director of Business and Sales, Jacob Kindberg, said he's very proud that the team saw a 5% increase in attendance in 2022.  Kindberg says they saw a 100% increase in attendance from 2019 to 2021.  He says the team drew about 400 a game a few years ago... and, nearly averaged 900 a game this past season.

Two people arrested in Westfield -- again -- on illegal drug charges...
Two Westfield residents have been arrested -- again -- for allegedly being in possession of illegal drugs during a third raid on their home this year.  Sheriff's officers say their Narcotics Investigation Team... along with members of the Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team... and others... executed a search warrant Thursday morning at 7617 Felton Rd.  The Sheriff's Office had previously executed search warrants at this same residence back on Sept. 8 and 23.  Police arrested 34 year-old Mark Baker... and Alexis Campbell on several drug possession charges... after finding a quantity of methamphetamine, fentanyl, clonazepam... drug paraphernalia, cash and four long guns.  Both face Felony third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance charges so far.  Both were taken to the county jail pending Centralized Arraignment.  Anyone with information about suspicious or narcotics related activity in their area is asked to call the Narcotics Investigators Tip line call at either 800-344-8702 or 716-664-2420.

Gillibrand hopes approval of one-week continuing resolution leads to omnibus spending bill approval...
The U.S. Senate has now approved the one-week continuing resolution to keep the federal government operating through next Friday, Dec. 23.  New York Democratic Senator Kirsten Gillibrand supported the measure... which she says gives lawmakers time to finalize a one-year, omnibus bill next week.  Gillibrand says both bills are important to our state because it includes funding for state projects... defense spending for places like Ft. Drum, health care... and, the "9/11" victims fund.  She says the omnibus bill is going to be the culmination of the past two-years of work in the one-dozen areas of federal spending.  That bill is expected to cost about $1.7-trillion. 

Sundquist says city looking to move forward on West Third St. Streetscape project with new lighting and trees...
Jamestown officials say -- depending on how cooperative the weather is -- work to complete the West Third Street new tree planting project may begin shortly.  That from Mayor Eddie Sundquist this week... who says they are starting to get some of the trees that will replace the old Cathedral Oaks that had to be taken down due to disease and age.  Sundquist gave an update during this week's City Council work session... and, says they'll be reaching out to property owners about putting the trees in either before we get fully into Winter... or when the weather breaks in the Spring of 2023.  He says the recent delay has also been caused by the fact they haven't received the new lighting fixtures for that area between Hall and Hallock Streets.  He says those are on "back-order..." but, the bases are now in.  As opposed to one type of tree replacing the large Oak trees... City Parks Manager and Arborist Dan Stone has decided on a few varieties of trees to avoid disease that got into the Oaks over the years. 

Many JPS students still having trouble dealing with social and emotional aspects of being back in school...
Students are in class... without masks or other restrictions.  However... Jamestown School Superintendent Kevin Whitaker says school is not 'normal' yet.  Dr. Whitaker says the effort to get back to normal has taken a toll on everyone... but, especially younger childre.  As a result... he says some students are having trouble with the social and emotional aspects of being in school.  He says some students had a 'rocky return' as they struggle with dealing with larger groups... and, hallways full of people.  Attendance in the city schools this month has not suffered from the flu or other illnesses... at least so far.  And Dr. Whitaker does not anticipate a return to state mandated masking at this time.  He spoke during an interview with our Dennis Webster Thursday morning on WJTN.

Holiday Haul underway... and running through Saturday afternoon...
The annual 'Holiday Haul' for St. Susan's Center is underway at the Jamestown Cycle Shop in Brooklyn Square.  Strong winds and freezing rain were much in evidence as Northwest Arena Executive Director Keith Martin launched the 10th annual effort early Thursday morning.  Martin says they hope the community responses like it has in the past.  He and other volunteers will accept food... and, financial donations for Jamestown's largest soup kitchen again until 6 p.m. today... and, one last day Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.  The Executive Director of St. Susan's, Cherie Rowland, says all donations will be gratefully accepted, but they are in particular need of canned fruits and vegetables, condiments, and coffee.  Rowland says they're averaging about 120 people coming into the soup kitchen every day.  The 2021 Holiday Haul brought in over 6 1/2 tons of food, and over $24,000.

Comedianne Amy Poehler to join National Comedy Center's Advisory Board...
A well-known comedic actress is the newest member of the National Comedy Center's advisory board of directors.  Center Executive Director Journey Gunderson says Amy Poehler is joining the panel in 2023... and, adds that the actress, writer, producer and director joins a roster of creative talent who helps guide the Center’s mission to present the story of comedy in its state-of-the-art museum and to preserve its heritage for future generations.  Gunderson says Poehler's had a "wide-ranging comedy career that includes improvisation... situation comedy... and feature films.  The Emmy Award-winner has been acclaimed for her eight years as a cast member, and writer on Saturday Night Live... and, as lead actor, producer and writer on NBC's 'Parks and Recreation.'

Wide range of Winter Weather -- including wind and ice -- returns to Jamestown area, and northeast...
There's going to be a wide range of Winter weather conditions here in Western New York now through early next week... and, a Winter Weather Advisory is now in effect through 7 p.m. tonight.  That from Forecaster Jason Alumbaugh with the National Weather Service in Buffalo... who tells us we'll see a combination of rain, freezing rain... snow and sleet through the day today.  He adds there will also be gusty winds at times.  That added up to some slick conditions this morning... and, still some this afternoon -- especially in Cattaraugus County.  Police dispatchers there say the main problem areas are Interstate 86 and Route 219.  There were still about two-dozen outages in the National Grid territory in Chautauqua County about Noon... with the largest possibly being in Gerry.  With that... the Gerry Fire Department has opened up it's hall as a temporary warming center.  Alumbaugh says the next major weather system arrives Friday night... and, is part of the major Winter weather system moving through the upper midwest and south.  Alumbaugh says some places in the north county area will be most affected... with up to 8 to 12 inches of snow through early next week.  The Weather Service has now issued a Winter Storm Watch beginning at 7 p.m. Friday.

Sempolinski votes no on one-week Continuing Resolution...
The Democrat-led House of Representatives has approved a one-week... stop-gap spending bill that will keep the federal government operating for through Dec. 23.  That as Democrats and Republicans bicker over a longer-term measure for next year that would likely spend more than $1.5-trillion.  The vote took place last night... and, local Congressman Joe Sempolinski said earlier in the day he would not support it.  Sempolinski says that's not even "close to what should be done..." because House Republicans haven't even been part of the discussions.  Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Monday that "appropriators held positive and productive conversations" over the past weekend.  In his short... 3-and-a-half months in the House... Sempolinski says this will be the second continuing resolution he's had to vote on.  He says -- again -- he will vote no... calling it a "horrific process" that does nothing to help America's "fiscal situation."  Sempolinski made his comments during his weekly telephone conference call with Southern Tier media.

NYPA approves low-cost Hydropower allocation for coal recycling facility... 
The New York Power Authority board has approved a low-cost Niagara hydropower allocation for a coal recycling company located in northern Chautauqua County.  The NYPA Board Tuesday approved the 2,550 kilowatt allocation in support of Coal Ash Recycling's expansion, spurring nearly $45-million in capital investment, and creating 20 green jobs in the region.  CAR, an owner of landfill sites that hold fly ash... a key component in concrete manufacturing... is planning the expansion project at its Fredonia facility to remediate and process fly ash so that it may be used in the production of low-carbon green concrete.  Fly ash is a by-product of burning ground coal to generate electricity.  CAR's Chautauqua County landfill contains fly ash produced at the Dunkirk Generating Station in the 1960s through the 1980s.

Dunkirk City lawmakers approve amended city budget...
Dunkirk city lawmakers are going forward with a 2023 budget proposal that includes more than a dozen changes.  On Tuesday, the Common Council adopted the amended spending plan by a 3-2 vote during a special meeting at City Hall.  Among the changes are the rejection of a $15,000 increase in the city attorney's salary... and the elimination of $30,000 that funds the city's annual Fourth of July fireworks display.  Councilman at-Large David Damico says the council was eyeing a "long-term solution."  Damico believes the city should be tightening it's belts a bit because of possible recession next year.  Mayor Willie Rosas is vetoing all but one of the proposed changes, describing most of them as "careless and political in nature."  The only amendment Rosas did not veto is a $2,000 increase in contracted services for the Dunkirk Lighthouse. 

Jamestown man arrested for assault following domestic incident...
A city man is accused of assaulting a woman duing a domestic incident on Jamestown's southside Tuesday night.  City police were called to the undisclosed location about 9 p.m., and, found that 25 year-old Chevez Brown had intentionally injured the female victim.  Brown was arrested for third-degree assault... and, taken to the city jail pending arraignment.

Gasoline prices in Jamestown-area continue falling, but, are still above national average...
Gasoline prices continue to fall across the nation... and, that's been the case again in the Jamestown-area over the past week.  AAA East Central's Gas Price Report says a gallon of regular, unleaded gas this week fell to just over $3.89... with some locations now reporting a price at $3.86.  That's a 12-cent per gallon drop since the beginning of last week.  However... that's still 31 cents higher than this time last year.  Nationally... the average price fell another 15-cents to $3.25 cents a gallon at mid-week.  That's 53-cents less than a month ago.  AAA says the relief comes as Americans are driving less... and, oil prices are remaining lower.  According to data Energy Information Administration... gas demand remained low at 8.3-million barrels per day last week, about 605-thousand barrels per day lower than a year ago.  The price of crude oil ended last week at $71 per barrel.

Florida woman formally charged on federal drug trafficking of large amount of Fentanyl...
A woman from Florida now faces federal charges after allegedly being found with more than 9-pounds of Fentanyl pills during a traffic stop in Jamestown a week ago.  That traffic stop... which resulted in the arrest of 64 year-old Elina Martinez of Miami... is also receiving praise from City Councilman Jeff Russell... who is a retired Jamstown Police officer.  U.S. Attorney Trini Ross announced Tuesday that Martinez was taken into federal custody on charges of possession with intent to distribute, and distributing 400 grams or more of fentanyl.  Russell says it's "alarming" that she was found with 50,000 to 60,000 pills which -- depending on the potency -- could be enough to "kill every man, woman and child in the city of Jamestown."  Federal prosecutors say a JPD detective requested a uniformed patrol officer to do a traffic stop on a rental car being driven by Martinez for numerous traffic violations.  They say she made some suspicious movements... and, was asked to get out of the car.  Police then -- with her permission -- searched the vehicle and found a suspicious powder residue in a suitcase.  Two K-9 dogs were brought to the scene and alerted police to the presence of “drugs...” and, further searching uncovered the 9-pounds... 13 ounces of blue pills, which field tested positive for fentanyl.  If convicted... Martinez faces a manditory sentence of 10 years in prison, and a maximum of life.

Russell also praises effort on last weeks three drug raids in Jamestown and Falconer...
City Councilman Jeff Russell is also praising the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force and neighboring agencies for their work on last week's three raids that led to 19 people being arrested on drug trafficking charges.  Russell says it was great to see the collaboration between the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office and Ellicott Town Police in helping to execute three search warrants at 628 Spring St. and 15 West Cowden Pl. in Jamestown... and, 252 West Main St. in Falconer last Wednesday.  At 628 Spring... police arrested six people... and, found a quantity of drugs there.  The raid at 15 West Cowden led to 10 arrests... and, investigators found just over 67-grams of Fentanyl... 3-grams of methamphetime... and, $1,100 cash.  In Falconer... three people were arrested... and, police seized 40 grams of fentanyl, over 16 grams of methamphetamine... along with a 9-mm pistol that was previously reported stolen in Lakewood... a large capacity ammunition feeding device... and $1,800 cash. 

Two city women arrested for possessing meth during traffic stop...
Two Jamestown residents have been arrested on narcotics possession charges following a traffic stop on the city's southside early Monday night.  City police were on patrol shortly before 7 p.m. when officers spotted a car with a broken taillight.  Police then stopped the car.  Officers say the driver, 40 year-old Jamie Warner, started to get out of the vehicle... but, officers commanded her to stay in the vehicle several times.  Warner got out of the vehicle... and, started to walk away from officers before being detained.  She was found to have an oustanding warrant for her arrest... and, police found 6.5-grams of methamphetamine and a suboxone sublingual film in her possession.  Her passenger... 35 year-old Amanda Penhollow... was found with 1.6-grams of meth in her possession.  Warner faces charges including third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... while Penhollow faces one count of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  Both were held pending arraignment.

AAA recognizes 10 local police agencies with Road Safety Awards...
Ten area police agencies from New York state and Pennsylvania were honored Tuesday by AAA's East Central Office for their efforts to improve motorist safety on the highway.  AAA East Central Safety Advisor Terry Rae Anthony hosted the police departments for a luncheon at the Olive Garden in Lakewood.  Anthony says the organization cares about the "motoring public..." and need the local police to help get the message out.  She says six of the departments... including Jamestown... earned the top -- or "Platinum" award for doing at least a five-year project to work on something that needed improvement in their jurisdictions.  Anthony says the other five Platinum winners were the St. Mary's and Warren departments in Pennsylvania... along with the Chautauqua County and Elk County Sheriff’s Departments... and the New York State Police in Jamestown.  She says the agencies apply for the awards.  She says their "Gold" awards... the second highest recognition to be awarded... were given to the Conewango, Warren County Sheriff's, and Youngsville Police Departments in Pennsylvania.  She adds a "Bronze" award was given to the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Police Department. 

Jackson Center host's 22nd Founders' Day Tuesday...
The Robert H. Jackson Center marked its 22nd anniversary Tuesday at the annual Founders' Day event.  President Kristan McMahon announced the theme for 2023 programs at the center in downtown Jamestown will be "The U.S. Supreme Court: Final, Infallable, Future."  McMahon says the board of directors has approved a three-year plan for the Jackson Center... with details to be made public early next year.  Four past board members were honored in a brief, informal ceremony at Founders' Day:  Jeanette Carlson, Tom Schmidt, Randy Sweeney, and Greg Peterson.  Peterson... one of the founders of the Jackson Center, says he believes the work of the center has just begun.

City Council overrides Sundquist's five budget vetoes...
The city of Jamestown officially has a new budget in place for 2023 after the city council last night overrode the five vetoes made to Mayor Eddie Sundquist's proposal.  Council Finance Committee Chairwoman Kim Ecklund says most of the 27 amendments her committee offered dealt with correcting more than $500,000 in mistakes and omissions in the mayor's original proposal.  Ecklund also corrected the record on a Buffalo-TV News story that reported council was cutting $3,000 from the Jamestown Urban Renewal Agency that was reportedly dealing with the homeless issue.  Ecklund says it was a reduction in the increase JURA was receiving... and, there is no change in funding.  Council mustered more than the 2/3rds majority needed for each override.  However... the one reducing the mayor's travel and education line by $6,500 was approved 6-to-3.

Sundquist says veto overrides are how "democracy works..."
Mayor Eddie Sundquist was disappointed by the outcome of the veto overrides... but, adds "that's how democracy works."  Sundquist, though, was most disappointed by council's decision to override his veto of a $75,000 increase in the projected sales tax revenue figure for 2023.  He believes the city will be hard-pressed to meet that increase... and sets the city "up for failure."  Sundquist says council's amount increases the projection to 6% to 7% more than this year... while he only budgeted 3% to 4%.  He says the county is only increasing it's projections about 5%.  The changes include adding just over $50,000 to the amount of undesignated fund balance being used to balance the $38.6-million budget.  Sundquist says... with the changes now approved... the just over $303,000 infusion of fund balance "balances" the 2023 budget.  Lawmakers had to vote on the overrides by Dec. 15.  The final budget still includes no tax rate increase.  It will remain $23.69 per $1,000 full value in 2023.

Three arrested in stolen car in Jamestown Monday morning...
Three city residents are accused of being inside a stolen vehicle that was stopped in the area of Martin Road and Burtch Street Monday morning.  Jamestown police say a patrol was in that area shortly before 8:30 a.m. when they saw the operator has pulled over, and was talking with a male subject, who was walking.  Police did a check on the vehicle... which had been reported stolen from the parking lot of SUNY Jamestown Community College back in October.  Officers then stopped the car... and, arrested all three people.  They say the driver, 29 year-old Daniel McKay, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of stolen property... two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance... and, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation.  Police say 23 year-old Camille Lopez was charged with false personation and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property... as was the third person... identified as 38 year-old Bart Bartlett. 

National Comedy Center announces new Newhart artifact...
A couple of new artifacts, and gift shop specials await patrons who come to the National Comedy Center and Lucy-Desi Museum during the holiday season.  In fact... the two new items have a holiday theme to them.  That from the Comedy Center's Manager of Marketing and Communications, Megan Arnone-Eckwahl... during an interview Monday morning with our Dennis Webster.  She says the now have Comedy legend Bob Newhart's papa Elf costume from the movie "Elf."  Arnone-Eckwahl adds that Newhart's "Elf" costume is in a showcase with Lindsey Lohan's "Santa" costume from the movie "Mean Girls."  In addition... she says the gift shop at each location is selling merchandise at 25% off, and admission is not necessary.  For more information... go on-line to ComedyCenter.org.

Vehicle noise complaint leads to druge and weapons possession arrest in Jamestown...
A noise complaint for a loud vehicle on Jamestown's eastside early Monday morning has led to the arrest of a city man for alleged drug and weapons possession charges.  City police were called to a location on Barrows Street shortly after 2 a.m., and, found 30 year-old Dylan Abbey inside the vehicle.  Officers say they could see drug paraphernalia and narcotics in plain view... and, they ordered Abbey to open the door.  However... he drove off and came to a stop a short distance away, and was arrested without furuther incident.  During a search of the car... police say they found a quantity of Fentanyl, and Marijuana.  They also found three different pills -- all of which were controlled substances.  They add that Abbey was also found to be in possession of plastic knuckles... and, they found he had multiple driver's license suspensions.  He was arrested on numerous charges including second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation... and, and Felony charges including third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance... third-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and three counts of seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  He was jailed pending arraignment.

Homeless man arrested after shoplifting, vehicle pursuit in Lakewood and Busti...
A homeless man who allegedly stole a car in the city of Jamestown faces more than two-dozen charges after he was accused of stealing items from the Lakewood Wal-Mart store, and leading police on a vehicle pursuit.  Lakewood-Busti Police were called to the Fairmount Avenue store about 4 p.m. last Saturday afternoon on a larceny report.  When they arrived... they saw 32 year-old Jonathan King leaving the store... and, getting into the car and driving off.  King then allegedly led police on a vehicle pursuit until the car got stuck in a yard on Southwestern Drive in the town of Busti.  He then ran off on foot before being caught by police.  King is charged with third-degree unlawfully fleeing police in a motor vehicle... third-degree criminal possession of a weapon... resisting arrest... second-degree reckless endangerment... third and fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property... and others -- including 16 vehicle and traffic charges.  He was taken to the county jail, pending arraignment.

Three arrested in connection with Portland robbery and possession of stolen property...
Two people from the town of Portland have been accused of luring a third person to an address in the town earlier this month... then assaulting and robbing the victim.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to the scene on Saturday, Dec. 3, about 2:30 a.m. to investigate.  Deputies say they found that 23 year-old Rebecca Gard had convinced the victim to meet her at the address... and, once they arrived... the victim was attacked by 29 year-old Phillip Whitfield and beaten up.  Deputies say Gard and Whitfield then allegedly stole property from the victim.  The next day... they also arrested a third person... 28 year-old Nicholas Marczynski who also had some of the stolen property.  He was charged with fifth-degree criminal possession of stolen property.  Whitfield is charged with third-degree robbery, second-degree harassment... second-degree unlawful imprisonment... second-degree aggravated harassment... and, criminal mischief.  Gard was arrested on an active City of Dunkirk warrant... and, taken to Dunkirk for arraignment.  She was later arraigned on fourth-degree grand larceny and petty larceny charges.  All three suspects were released pending court appearances in Portland Town Court.

Bi-partisan, Senate Immigration proposal faces time and other challenges in Congress...
It's not likely that a recently proposed, bi-partisan immigration deal can pass before the end of the year since there's little time left in the current "lame duck" session of Congress.  In addition... some lawmakers have raised concerns with the compromise framework that would legalize roughly 2-million “Dreamers” in exchange for stronger border security.  Others were concerned by the absence of concrete details in the deal announced by Senators Thom Tillis of North Carolina... and, Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona.  Local Congressman Joe Sempolinski says he's seen no written proposal... so, it's a "long way" from being even brought to the floor of both chambers. for consideration.  At this point... Tillis, a Republican, says he doesn’t see the deal being included in an omnibus spending agreement.  That's the final, must-pass legislation for this Congress before Republicans take control of the House in January.  The stakes are high because House Republicans are unlikely to embrace any immigration compromise once they control that chamber.  Sempolinski made his comments during his weekly telephone conference call with Southern Tier Media.

JPD investigators find two loaded handguns inside vacant building...            
A drug investigation has led to the discovery of two loaded hand-guns inside a vacant building in the city of Jamestown.  City police say members of the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force raided the home last week... and, during their search, detectives found a loaded .357-caliber revolver... and, a loaded .45-caliber pistol.  Police say the revolver had previously been reported as stolen from a
citizen in Warren, Pennsylvania.  Officials says the search warrant was executed as part of an ongoing investigation into illegally
possessed drugs and firearms in the Jamestown area.  Police say there are no charges at this time... but the investigation is on-going.

Jackson Center to host Founders’ Day event Tuesday...
The Robert H. Jackson Center is inviting the public to visit this Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. for the annual Founders’ Day open house.  Center President Kristan McMahon says the center, at Fourth Street and Prendergast Ave. in Jamestown has been beautifully decorated for the holidays thanks to several entities... including designers and florists, and some ornaments created by local elementary school chidren.  Light refreshments will also be offered.  And there will be a brief program as well.  There’s no cost to attend the Tuesday events, but please phone the Robert H. Falconer mayor honors Thomas Tedesco on awarding of medals for WWII service... 
It was a proud day for the village of Falconer last Thursday when 98 year-old Thomas Tedesco received all of his military medals during a ceremony in Jamestown.  Tedesco fought on the front-lines of World War-Two... and, finally received the nine medals he had coming for his service.  They were presented at the Fenton History Center during a program hosted by State Senator George Borrello.  Falconer Mayor Dave Jaroszynski praised Tedesco's nearly three-years of servce... and, reflected on Tedesco's service to the Falconer community as a resident and businessman... including selling pumpkins from his home.  Senator Borrello says the medal's being presented to Tedesco were "long overdue..." and, include the Bronze Star -- the fourth-highest military honor for soldiers in combat. 

Suspect in July shooting in Sinclairville arrested...
There's been an arrest in the case of a 19 year-old man who was shot and killed during an incident in the village of Sinclairville this past July.  Sheriff's officers say they arrested the person they say was responsible for shooting and killing 19 year-old Joseph Misciagno back on July 5 in the area of Park and Reed Streets.  Deputies say the case was presented to the Chautauqua County Grand Jury by District Attorney Jason Schmidt... and, a warrant was issued for the unidentified suspect's arrest.  They cannot be identified due to their age.  That person has been charged and arraigned on one count of first-degree manslaughter... and, was jailed without bail.

Police find 50,000 to 60,000 Fentanyl pills during traffic stop in Jamestown...
Multiple police agencies in the Jamestown-area working a joint investigation of fentanyl trafficking have seized more than 9 pounds of fentanyl pills... worth about $500,000.  City police say members of the Jamestown Metro Drug Task Force... Chautauqua County Sheriff's Narcotics investigators... and, Ellicott Town Police... set up surveillance on a vehicle traveling in the area around Noon Wednesday.  Officers conducted a traffic stop on the car... and, deployed JPD K-9 "Cal..." and Sheriff's Department K-9 "Drake."  They say between 50,000 and 60,000 pills made up the 9-pounds and 13 ounces of Fentanyl seized... and, there was also $3,000 cash inside the vehicle.  The female driver was taken into custody... and, will be charged in federal court as part of the ongoing investigation.  

United Way reaches 65% of 2022 campaign goal...
The United Way of Southern Chautauqua County is doing well... so far... in the 2022 campaign.  Executive Director Amy Rohler says they're reached 65% of their $1.3-million goal.  Rohler says the campaign is getting out of the COVID doldrums... and, started a new "365 Small Business Circle" to promote getting small businesses involved and engaged in the campaign.  She says the United Way benefits 42 separate programs... all of them in Chautauqua County.  Rohler says 100% of their funds go towards local programming.  The campaign will wrap up on Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2023.  Rohler says anyone who would like to donate to the United Way should contact their office at 483-1561 or go to uwayscc.org.

City man arrested for alleged domestic with baby in his car...
A Jamestown man is accused of trying to hit one person with his car... and, run over another during a domestic incident on North Main Street Wednesday afternoon.  City police say a patrol in the area spotted the domestic "in progress" about 4 p.m.  Officers say they found that 24 year-old Tyler Coulter also had his baby in the vehicle during the incident.  However... no one was hurt.  Police say they arrested Coulter after video surveillance footage confirmed the incident.  He's charged with first-degree reckless endangerment... first-degree criminal contempt... and, two counts of endangering the welfare of a Child... and, Aggravated Family Offense.  Coulter was jailed pending arraignment.

New, stricter rules protecting the purchasers of gift cards and gift certificates in New York state go into effect today -- Saturday (12/10).  The new law mandates any gift card or certificate remain valid for at least nine years.  Any card or certificate with a value of $5 or less can be redeemed for cash.  In addition, activation, redemption or similar fees are prohibited.  The only exception is a $9 activation fee that will be allowed for any card or certificate redeemable at multiple, unaffiliated merchants.  Any similar item purchased in 2022 before Saturday, or in previous years is covered by different rules.  The state's consumer protection website has full details. 

First JHS A' Cappella Vespers to be held Sunday afternoon...
The Jamestown High School A Cappella Choir is set to perform its first Vespers service of the season... this Sunday at 4 p.m. at First Lutheran Church.  Director Lauren Scharf says the choir is particularly excited to present this year's program because it's the first one that can be held before a "full audience" since 2019, due to COVID.  Last year, the choir wore masks and the audience had to maintain proper social distance.  For this year's choir, the 98th A Cappella group, Scharf has chosen some new tunes and arrangements... in addition to traditional favorites such as 'Kyrie' and 'Silent Night.'  The vespers program will be repeated at First Lutheran on Sunday, Dec. 18.

Man with about two-dozen unregistered guns and high-capacity magazines arrested after domestic call... 
A State Police investigation of a domestic incident in the town of Ellington late last month has led to the arrest of a man on numerous illegal weapons possession charges.  Troopers in Jamestown say they were called to the scene on Waterman Road on Friday afternoon, Nov. 25, for a verbal argument that became a 'physical' domestic incident.  Police say 30 year-old Major Stearns then allegedly menaced the victim with a pistol before he was arrested.  Troopers found the pistol... and, a search warrant was issued.  Investigators then found multiple unregistered firearms and high-capacity magazines... which were seized.  Police say Stearns was charged with one count of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon... 10 counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon... second-degree Menacing and assault and criminal obstruction of breathing.  He was jailed pending arraignment.

Love School in Jamestown locked-down briefly during "Community Operation" by JPD...
Out of an abundance of caution... the Jamestown Public Schools put Love Elementary School into temporary lock-down while city Police conducted a "community operation" in the area.  School officials say Jamestown Police made them aware of what was going on... and, put the lock-down in place for about 10 minutes.  Spokesperson Cameron Hurst says the school day... soon after... continued as normal during the lockout and at no point were Love students or staff in any danger.  He adds, "as always, the safety of our students and staff is of the utmost importance and we appreciate the partnership with law enforcement."

County DA announces sentencing for city man accused of drug possession...
A Jamestown man will spend the next six-years in state prison after being sentenced in Chautauqua County Court on a drug possession charge.  District Attorney Jason Schmidt says County Court Judge David Foley also gave 50 year-old Christopher Howie three-years post-release supervision as a "non-violent" predicate Felon.  Schmidt says Howie pleaded guilty to third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance earlier this year.  However... he failed to appear in court for his initial sentencing back in May.  Howie was found and returned to court for sentencing on Wednesday.  Schmidt says he also received three-years post-release supervision.

Sempolinski calls on Biden administration to end "disasterous energy costs...
Chautauqua County's representative in Congress is calling on the Biden Administration to end it's "disasterous energy policy" that's causing his continuents to pay high energy bills.  Steuben County Republican Joe Sempolinski spoke on the floor of the House this week about the "troubling effects" of those costs... and, says it's important to go "on the record" to let people in Washington know what's going on in one of the colder parts of the nation.  Sempolinski says residents of the 23rd Congressional District have "had enough" of high energy bills, and, adds this can "become a matter of life or death for those of limited means."  He says it's "past time" for the president to allow the domestic energy sector to do their work.  Sempolinski says Biden could end the problem "opening our domestic oil and gas leases, and ending burdensome regulations on U.S. Energy development."  He says he... like his predecessor, Congressman Tom Reed... supports an "all of the above" energy policy for the United States. 

Sempolinski "disappointed" by Herschel Walker's defeat in Senate run-off...
Local Congressman Joe Sempolinski says he's "disappointed" that Republican Herschel Walker was defeated in the U.S. Senate run-off in Georgia.  On the one hand... Sempolinski says Democrats already had a slim majority in that chamber... but, adds the loss does allow Democrats to have full control of the Senate... with a 51-to-49 majority.  However... it also means that Democrats will hold all the committee chairmanships... without having to "share power" with the Republicans in a 50-50 split.  Sempolinski says there will still be a majority of Republicans in the House of Representatives... which will give them leadership roles... the ability to investigate... and, keep their hands on the government's pursestrings.  He made his comments during his weekly telephone conference call with Southern Tier media.

County alerts public about ongoing high-levels of drug overdoses, and overdose deaths -- due mainly to fentanyl... 
Chautauqua County officials are again alerting the public about the dangers of illegal drug use that's led to continued high rates of drug overdose and overdose fatalities.  County Executive P.J. Wendel also reminds the public that there are "multiple local resources available" to address the ongoing crisis.  Wendel says -- “Fentanyl, a powerful and deadly opioid, continues to be found in street drugs of all kinds and continues to cause overdose and death in our communities.  At the same time... numerous individuals and agencies throughout our county are working to combat addiction and reduce drug overdoses, and we are grateful for their life-saving efforts.”  Wendel says help for people struggling with substance use is available in many forms in the county, including:  Free Narcan... Free fentanyl test strips... licensed outpatient clinics providing counseling and medication-assisted treatment... peer support services... and, Inpatient rehab and residential services.  Grants Director Steve Kilburn with the county's Departement of Mental Hyigiene says the county "has many services and providers for individuals and families struggling with addiction."  He says more information can be found at CombatAddictionCHQ.com... or by calling the county's Crisis Hotline at 1-800-724-0461.

District Attorney Schmidt announces three sentencings in county court... 
A Jamestown man has been sentenced to six-years in state prison after pleading guilty to second-degree attempted robbery stemming from incident earlier this year.  Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt says 28 year-old Kyle Senear entered the plea before County Court Judge David Foley... and, also received five-years post-release supervision.  The attempted robbery took place in the city last April.  Schmidt says Senear was sentenced as a predicate felon... and, thanked Jamestown police for their work on the case.

Another city man... 25 year-old Alejandro Ayala, was also sentenced this week to two-years in state prison, after pleading guilty to second-degree attempted criminal possession of a weapon.  Schmidt says Ayala also received three-years post-release supervision for the Class-D Felony.  He says the conviction resulted from an incident back in May of this year.

A Dunkirk woman also received two-years in state prision... and, one year post-release supervison for violating his probation for second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.  Schmidt adds that 34 year-old Loren Duman was also sentenced to one-year in state prison and one-year post release supervision after violating probation for fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.  He says the sentences will be served concurrently.  Schmidt says Duman was sentenced in 2017 to five-years probation after pleading guilty to the previously mentioned charges.

A Pennsylvania man has been sentenced to three-years in state prison for second-degree vehicular assault for a 2017 crash in the town of Ellicott in which his passenger was seriously hurt.  Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt says 34 year-old David Jenkins received the indeterminate term from Judge David Foley Monday.  Schmidt says the charges were filed in November of 2017 following an accident that occured as Jenkins was trying to flee police.  He was indicted by the County Grand Jury for Vehicular Assault and a warrant was issued for his arrest after he fled the area.  Jenkins was found in Pennsylvania in 2020 and brought back to Chautauqua County.  He pled guilty to the charge in February 2020... and, failed to appear for sentencing and another warrant was issued for his arrest.  Jenkins was found in Pennsylvania in January of this year... and, was returned to the jurisdiction for sentencing. 

Wendel announces formal plans to merge social services with Dept. of Mental Hygiene...
Chautauqua County Executive P.J. Wendel has announced formal plans to merge Chautauqua County's social services divisions with the Department of Mental Hygiene.  Wendel on Tuesday announced the reorganization of the county's human services programs... as well as new leadership structure for the new Department of Mental Hygiene and Social Services.  Wendel believes this will "better align" and "further enhance" services to the public.  He says the new department will be headed up by current Department of Mental Hygiene Director Carmello Hernandez.  He feels it will work because many residents needing help in one area, need the other as well.  Wendel says Hernandez will become director of the Department of Mental Hygiene and Social Services... and, Dr. Michael Faulk will serve as the county's Chief Medical Officer and head of the Department of Health.  The move is meant to replace former Health and Human Services Director Christine Schuyler... who was not reappointed last month.  Wendel says Faulk has been involved from Day-One with his COVID Response Team.  The changes will have to go before the County Legislature, and Wendel hopes to have the new structure in place early next year.

Jamestown man arrested for dirtbike theft...
A city man is jailed on $50,000 cash bail for allegedly stealing a dirtbike from a garage in the town of Ripley this past June.  State Police in Fredonia say they responded to a complaint June 9 that an unknown person had gotten into the garage on Klondike Road through a window... and, took the Kawasaki dirt bike... which was worth about $4,000.  Troopers say they their investigation led to the arrest for 22 year-old Cortland Hepfner for second-degree burglary, and third-degree grand larceny.  A few days after the burglary occured... State Police found the bike in the town of Dunkirk and returned it to the owner. 

Man from Ripley arrested in attempted assault...
A Ripley man has been arrested for allegedly trying to injure another person during a reported assault late last weekend in the west county town.  Sheriff's deputies were called to the undisclosed location just before 5 p.m. last Sunday... and on arrival... found that 33 year-old Patrick Baldwin had intended to cause serious physical injury to another person during the incident.  He's accused of striking the victim, and causing injury to that person.  Baldwin was arrested for third-degree attempted assault... and, second-degree harassment.  He was taken to the County Jail pending Centralized Arraignment.

City of Jamestown sees lower than projected third-quarter sales tax revenues...
There was a slight drop in the amount of sales tax revenue the city of Jamestown took in during the third-quarter of this year compared to 2021.  However... one of the city's top financial people says they're still on track to make this year's projections.  New Deputy Comptroller Catie Maycock reported to the City Council during Monday night's work session that the city received $2.26-million between July and September.  That's about $48,000 less than anticipated... but, Maycock adds the city has reached 74.7% of projected revenues at the end of three quarters. 
 

Schmidt calls for bail to be revoked for Rolison after fatal Arkwright accident...
Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt is expressing frustration over the fact Randall Rolison was free on bail when he was involved in last weekend's fatal, two-vehicle crash in the town of Arkwright.  In a printed release late Monday... Schmidt added that... given these circumstances... he will ask that Rolison's bail be revoked and he be held until he stands trial in Hughan's death.  He adds that -- "we are also actively working to develop information and evidence arising from Saturday’s accident which may lead us to file new charges against Mr. Rolison."  In addition to being out on bail on the manslaughter charge... Schmidt says Rolison also faces three counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.  The D-A says he requested $500,000 bail... and $1-million property bond.  However... Judge David Foley set bail considerably lower... totaling $105,000 cash... and Rolison posted bail.

Public at City Council meeting also express dismay over Rolison being out on bail, as well as pedestrian safety...
Members of the public at last night's City Council work session expressed their dismay over the fact Rolison was involved in another fatal accident.  However... they focused more on the city... and, keeping people safe at intersections and cross-walks.  Resident Gary Mooney knows Lexi Hughan's mother, and says people need to use "situational awareness" in those situations... and, know whether a vehicle is coming from any direction when you arrive at an intersection.  Another resident... Missy Paterniti... says she's raised just over $2,000 for a permanent memorial to Lexi Hughan near where she was struck and killed on December 31st of 2021.  She's already talked with city officials for guidance on putting something in an area of Dow Park to replace the make-shift memorial that's been up at the intersection of Washington and West Sixth Streets since that fatal accident occured.

Sundquist announces vetoes of five of the 27 budget amendments by City Council...
Only five of the 27 budget amendments made by the Jamestown City Council to Mayor Eddie Sundquist's proposed 2023 budget have been vetoed.  Lawmakers now have until a week from this Thursday -- Dec. 15 -- to override any or all of the vetoes.  However... Sundquist says he wants to keep talking with lawmakers about the best way to go.  Two vetos were discussed briefly last night... including one to restore $5,600 for engineering supplies.  Sundquist says, with passage of the federal Infrastructure Bill... more supplies are needed for the added work.  He says that includes blueprints, and work on redesigning streetscapes, and other work.  The second veto discussed had to do with an $11,000 allocation for the mayor's travel budget.  Sundquist says it's mainly to cover costs going to sessions of the New York State Conference of Mayors... and, the National League of Cities.  Sundquist says he's very close to $11,000 this year after travel was down the last two years because of the COVID Pandemic.  Council is tentatively looking at a special meeting to deal with any overrides before next Monday night's work session.

City man accused of threatening people with an axe and machete arrested...
A Jamestown man has been arrested for allegedly swinging an axe and machete at more than one person during an incident on the city's northside Sunday night.  City police were called to the undisclosed location about 7 p.m. on a report of a person with a weapon.  When they arrived... officers learned that 61 year-old Michael McCool had brandished the axe and machete... but, no one was hurt.  McCool was arrested on two counts of fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon... and, one of second-degree menacing.  He was jailed pending arraignment.

One person suffers smoke inhalation in Dunkirk house fire...
Chautauqua County fire investigators are looking into the cause of a house fire earlier today in the city of Dunkirk.  Dunkirk Fire Chief Mike Edwards says his department, along with a mutual aid crew from East Dunkirk, responded to the blaze at 92 West Chestnut Street around 5:40 a.m.  Edwards says the single-family home was "heavily-engulfed" in flames on arrival.  One person got out of the house, but, had to be treated for smoke inhalation.  Edwards says firefighters made entry inside the house and quickly extinguished the flames.  Extensive fire, heat and smoke damage was reported throughout the home.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Tenth-Anniversary "Holiday Haul" to be held in Jamestown next week...
This year will mark the 10th anniversary of another fund-raiser and food drive for the Jamestown area's largest soup kitchen.  The "Holiday Haul" will again be held for three-days this month in the parking lot of the Jamestown Cycle Shop in Brooklyn Square.  It's again being headed up by Northwest Savings Bank Director Keith Martin... who says it's hard to believe it's been 10 years.  However... it's to help the St. Susan's Center... which needs the money and food to help their operations.  Matine says it will be held on Thursday, Dec. 15 through Saturday, Dec. 17.  He says hours will be 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. that Thursday and Friday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.  Martin says they are just hoping to do a little better than last year... when they raised a record $24,000... and, 6-and-a-half tons of food and supplies for St. Susan's.  The soup kitchen's director, Cherie Rowland, says she appreciates everyone who's made the Holiday Haul a big success... and says they need a number of non-perishable food items... and, supplies.  

(**Breaking)City man accused in last New Year's fatal accident involved in another fatal in north county...
A Jamestown man... accused of last New Years Eve's fatal hit and run accident involving a city teen... has been involved in another fatal accident -- this time in northern Chautauqua County.  State Police in Jamestown say 59 year-old Randall Rolison was driving a sports utility vehicle south on Center Road in the town of Arkwright shortly before 11 p.m. last Saturday evening when he failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection with Route 83.  Troopers say Rolison's trailblazer struck a pick-up westbound pick-up truck on Route 83.  A passenger in the truck... 71 year-old Linda Kraemer of South Dayton... was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.  The driver of the truck, Kraemer's 71 year-old husband, Gary, was taken to Brook's Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.  Rolison and his two passengers were also treated for non-life threatening injuries.  State Police say their Collision Reconstruction Team... and, Bureau of Criminal Investigation are continuing their investigation.  Rolison was driving a car-hauler last New Year's Eve when his vehicle struck and killed 15 year-old Lexy Hughan in Jamestown.

City firefighers snuff out room fire at West 7th St. address where fire hit last October...
Jamestown firefighters made quick work of a second-story room Friday night in an apartment house that had been condemned after it was first struck by fire in late October.  City Fire Battalion Chief Shawn Shilling says crews were called to 216 W. 7th St. shortly before 7 p.m., and, found flames coming from the room of origin.  However... Shilling says it was a different location than the Oct. 27 fire... which was also confined to the room of origin.  Shilling says firefighters had the flames under control in about 15 to 20 minutes.  No one was inside the apartment house when the Friday night fire started... and, no one was hurt.  One person suffered burns in the October fire... and, is recovering.  The cause remains under investigation... and, if you have any information... call the department's Arson Tipline at 483-7596.  Shilling says all calls will be kept confidential.

County's Hall Clothier Building fully reopens today...
The entire Hall Clothier Building in Mayville will reopen to the public today... with full access to the Chautauqua County Department of Health and Human Services.  County Executive P.J. Wendel says he's pleased to announce the reopening... which he had hoped would happen last week.  However... he learned last Friday that their Buildings and Grounds crews would have everything ready today.  Wendel says most all of the damage had been removed by late last week... and he thanked Assistant Deputy Public Facilities Director Josh Rothwell and his crews "for all of their hard work. I also thank our residents for their patience.”  He says the damage has run upwards of half-a-million dollars... including thousands of dollars worth of computers... and, addition damage behind walls.  A water line break to an HVAC roof unit on Nov. 2 led to the second, third and fourth floors of the building being closed to the public. Wendel made his comments for last weekend's "Community Spotlight" program on the six Media One Radio Group stations.

North County woman arrested for major shoplifting at Lakewood Wal-Mart...
A woman from northern Chautauqua County has been arrested for shoplifting neaerly 600-dollars worth of merchandise from the Lakewood Wal-Mart SuperCenter.  Lakewood Busti Police were called to the scene at 350 East Fairmount Ave. just after 7 p.m. Saturday... and, security pointed out the suspect trying to flee.  Officers arrested 38 year-old Leanna White of Irving in the parking lot.  White was found to have pushed a cart containing 56 items valued at just over $588 out of the store without paying for them.  It was later discovered that she had been banned from all Wal-Mart stores in April of 2021 due to a similar incident at the Fredonia Wal-Mart store.  She was arrested for third-degree burglary, fourth-degree criminal mischief... and, petty larceny... and, issued appearance tickets for Busti Town Court.

Jamestown's city Christmas tree lit to being last Saturday night's parade...
It was a chilly night... but, very festive for the city of Jamestown's annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Holiday Parade last Saturday night.  The Jamestown High Marching Band and Color Guard came early with a variety of seasonal tunes.  A short time later... Mayor Eddie Sundquist and others arrived on Tracy Plaza to welcome the crowd... and introduced the Matt and Danielle Stone family... who were grand marshalls for the parade.  They say they are involved a lot with children in their work, and were "very honored" to be named as grand marshalls.  The mayor then began the countdown for the crowd to light the 40-foot tall Norway Spruce tree... to the cheers of hundreds of people.  This year's Christmas tree was provided by the New Hope Community Church.  The Stones... and, their children... have been involved with Collaborative Children's Solutions and have packed up birthday boxes and gotten backpacks for young people in the community. 

Jamestown-area receives about 5 to 7 inches of snow from Lake Effect system...
A quick shot of Lake Effect Snow began falling late yesterday afternoon... and, continued through the overnight.  The National Weather Service in Buffalo continued a Winter Weather Advisory through early this afternoon... with up to seven inches falling during that time period along the higher elevations.  Forecaster Jon Hitchcock said Wednesday that we'll begin warming up again... starting on Friday.  Hitchcock says the "cold-shot" will only last about 24 hours... and, we warm back up into the 40s on Friday.  While there's not the large amounts of snow that are known to fall during Lake Effect Snow events... Hitchcock says this one will be different due to the amount of blowing and drifting snow in some areas.  The weather service is calling for another inch of snow during the day today before the snow, and the wind begin to taper off. 

Sundquist says he will likely sign off on majority of budget amendments, will work with council on others...
Jamestown Mayor Eddie Sundquist says he supports some of the 27 budget amendments the City Council approved at this week's meeting.  However... Sundquist says he wants to talk more with members of the panel's Finance Committee about dealing with some revenue lines that were changed to avoid any vetoes.  The mayor this morning says some costs changed from Oct. 7 when he first presented his proposed, $38.6-million budget.  He says most of the amendments are not huge, but, correct old figures, and update changes in costs for materials, and purchasing.  However... Sundquist says he is concerned about some of those revenue changes... especially regarding parking meter fees.  He proposed a 100% increase to cover costs without putting the city out of line with similar municipalities.  Sundquist says "we're barely breaking even on any of the parking ramps," and he says there are costs to changing the meters to accept cash, credit, and wireless payments.  He has until next Monday to sign... or veto the budget... or parts of the spending plan.  Both Sundquist's proposal and what council agreed to Monday night include no tax rate increase.

CSHOF announces Class of 2023 inductees...
The eleven newest members of the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame will be inducted next February after being announced by the hall's Board of Directors.  Hall of Fame President Randy Anderson says the Class of 2023 represents a wide range of schools, and organizations... and, represents all areas of the county.  Anderson says track and field, coaching, administration, wrestling, basketball, football and others are represented.  He says the inductees include: Bob Barlette, Sheldon Battle, Kirsten Green, David Hinson, Frank Jagoda-the-second... Bruce Johnson... Scott Kindberg... Fred Larson... Marty Nichols... Man from Cassadaga arrested for possessing handgun without NYS Permit...
A Cassadaga man has been arrested for allegedly being found in possession of a hand-gun without a valid New York State Pistol Permit.  Sheriff's officers say their Criminal Investigation Division began an probe into the matter back on Nov. 16, and, arrested 62 year-old Richard Echevarria at his home on Hall Road Monday afternoon.  He was found in possession of a Glock pistol... and, was charged with fourth-degree criminal possesssion of a weapon.  He was issued an appearance ticket for Charlotte Town Court.

Cattaraugus County man arrested for failure to register as sex offender...
A West Valley man is accused of failing to register as a Level-3 Sex Offender in Cattaraugus County within the 90-day period required.  Sheriff's deputies in Little Valley say they took 61 year-old James Denaro of Riley Road into custody Tuesday morning in the town of Ashford.  Officers say Denaro was arraigned in Ellicottville Town Court... and, released pending a future court appearance.

Jamestown's annual Christmas and Holiday Parade set for this Saturday...
The annual Jamestown Christmas Holiday Parade and tree lighting will take place this Saturday night in the downtown area... beginning at 6 PM with the tree lighting.  Collaborative Children's Solutions will again be coordinating this year's event... which will kick-off from the Third Street Bridge around 6:30... and, conclude at Tracy Plaza.  City Council President Tony Dolce says there are already a large number of units slated to take part.  Dolce says it looks like the weather will be good, and adds there are reportedly about 200 units taking part.  Officials say there will once again be a 'festive fireworks show' immediately after the parade.  This year's theme has organizers asking all residents and participants to display what brings them 'joy during the holidays' and share it.  It may be a favorite type of decorating, a specific holiday tradition, or even creating a float around a holiday movie or show.

National Fuel Gas Foundations names Chautauqua Striders as on of their grant recipients for "Giving Tuesday..."
A local organization that works with young people to hone their skills on both the athletic field and the classroom is receiving one of several grants from the National Fuel Gas Company Foundation.  The foundation has announced that the Chautauqua Striders in Jamestown will be receiving one of the grants from a pool of just over $110,000.  Among the other organizations receiving a grant is FeedMore-Western New York... the former Food Bank of Western New York.

A late morning fire on Jamestown's northeast side has destroyed a garage... and, it's contents -- including a car.  City Fire Battalion Chief Brian Acterberg says firefighters were called to the scene at 11 Blanchard St. -- near Winsor and Alton Place -- shortly before 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.  Acterberg says they encountered a fully-involved garage fire, that was threatening other structures close by.  He says crews began attacking the fire itself... but, also wetting down potential exposures.  Acterberg says an off-duty shift of seven firefighters and one commander were called in to assist at the scene.  He says crews worked hard to contain the fire because some adjacent property and other exposures were in jeopardy.  Acterberg says crews were on the scene for about 2 1/2 hours... and, no one was hurt.  The department's fire investigation team responded to the scene... and, determined that an electrical issue with jumper cables to the car inside triggered the blaze.

Mother of JHS student arrested after the youth disrupts several downtown businesses...
A city woman has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child after her high schooler was allowed to run around downtown Jamestown... disrupting several businesses during the day.  City police were called to the area of Jamestown High School shortly after 3 p.m. Monday for a "disorderly juvenile."  Officers found the youth, and took them to the JPD Juvenile Bureau.  Their investigation found the child had done this repeatedly... and, the child's mother was arrested.  Police say 43 year-old Meliza Velazquez-Vega was taken into custody for failure to exercise "reasonable diligence" in controling her child.  Velazquez-Vega was issued an appearance ticket, and later released.

Wendel says county Gas Tax Cap Holiday ends Thursday... but, says it provided little relief...
The cap on the gasoline tax in Chautauqua County will come to an end this Thursday -- Dec. 1.  County lawmakers voted back in April to cap the gas tax at $3 per gallon, through the end of November.  County Executive P-J Wendel says he questions whether the cap has provided much relief for motorists... and, where prices will go.  Wendel says he doesn't believe it's really helped.  He questions if there will be a spike in the price... because we really didn't get much relief when the cap was instituted.  Wendel says he's reluctant to support another gas tax holiday... because it had a minimal impact.  So far... there hasn't been a proposal to extend the cap.  Meanwhile, New York State's suspension on gas taxes continues until the end of the year.

Gas prices down slightly in Jamestown-area over the past week...
The average price for a gallon of regular, unleaded gasoline in the Jamestown-area is down just over a penny this week compared to last.  That from the AAA East Central's Gas Price Report... which says the cost is now slightly over $3.98 a gallon.  It was just under $4 last week.  Nationally... AAA says the average price dropped 12-cents this week to $3.54... which is 22-cents less than a month ago, and 15 cents more than a year ago.  Excluding holiday travel... the Energy Information Administration reported that gas demand fell from 8.74 million to 8.33 million barrels per day last week.  Meanwhile, total domestic gasoline stocks rose by more than 3-million barrels to 211 million barrels.  Increasing supply and fewer drivers fueling up have pushed pump prices lower.

Sheriff's Office provides new information on second set of human remains found in Portland in July...
There's new information being released on the second-set of human remains discovered this past July on the "Rails to Trails' hiking area in the town of Portland.  Sheriff's officers say the second female was found off Woleben Road along with the other remains... which were soon after identifed as Marquita Mull of Buffalo, who went missing in June of 2021.  Deputies say the second female is between 15 and 35-years of age... and, between 4'-11” and 5'-7" inches tall.  The Sheriff's Department Facebook page has pictures of the clothing worn by the unidentified female.  Research shows the clothes were first sold in the early 1990s.  The unidentified person’s remains are estimated to have been at the site where they were recovered since 2011 or earlier.   If you have any information on who this person might be... or who might have been wearing this clothing... you're asked to call Investigator Jacob Stahley at (716) 753-4973... or send an email to UnsolvedChautauqua@sheriff.us.

Red Kettle Campaign in Jamestown closing in on $10,000 raised...
There's been some progress in the Salvation Army of Jamestown's annual Red Kettle Campaign... but, there's still a ways to go to reach their final goal.  That from Major Kim Merchant... who says they're about $3,000 behind last year's total.  However... Merchant added Tuesday that they were only $1,000 below the amount they needed to trigger a $10,000 match from an anonymous donor.  Merchant says... while the numbers have improved... they still need volunteers to man the kettles.  She adds the indoor stands tend to fill up more quickly.  At the same time... Merchant says they know a lot of people don't carry cash anymore... so they've been able to put a texting option together.  She says that you can text "jamestownkettle" to 51555... and, you can make a donation whereever you are.  The campaign continues until Christmas Eve.  For more information... call the Salvation Army at 664-4108.
