Sempolinski discusses importance of "Lame Duck" session of Congress...
The "lame duck" session of Congress is underway... and, it's expected to be a busy one with leadership of the House expected to return to Republican hands on Jan. 3 of 2023.  Word is that the current Democratic majority will try to push ahead with billions of dollars in new spending before the end of the year.  Local Congressman Joe Sempolinski says that's why it's important that the Southern Tier District have a "voice" in the process because outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi will try to ram through as many bills as possible before January.  That will likely be seen in the Continuing Resolution that's expected to come before lawmakers before mid-December.  Sempolinski voted against the last one because the GOP didn't have a seat at the table during the discussions... and, says more spending won't help inflation.

Sempolinski says McCarthy is GOP nominee for House Speaker in 2023...
House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California has enough support among Republicans to become the next Speaker of the House.  However... that's still pending a small number of Congressional races not yet decided.  Local Congressman Joe Sempolinski doesn't have a vote on the matter... since he'll be out on Jan. 3 when the 118th Congress is seated.  However... he's been watching what's been going on.  Even with McCarthy getting the nod among the Republicans, it doesn't mean he's automatically speaker.  There is a constitutional process to naming a speaker... and that is getting a majority of members of Congress to elect a person.  That means needing at least 218 votes... and with the GOP expected to have a narrow majority now... that may be more difficult than it appears.
