Boil Water Order lifted in Fredonia... but, Conserve Water Order remains in place...
The boil water order for the village of Fredonia's Water system has been lifted. However... the conserve water order remains in effect. The Chautauqua County Health Department... along with the village... lifted the boil order over the weekend. Health officials say two consecutive days of testing showed that the water in the distribution system is safe for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, and, making coffee. Again... the conservation order remains in effect. The filtration equipment at the water treatment plant is still under stress due to the high levels of organic material in the raw Fredonia Reservoir water. In recent days, the water treatment plant has been able to produce water that has consistently met state Health Department safety standards. In order to continue making safe water, the filters will need to maintain a steady backwashing schedule which means more of the clean water that is produced at the plant will need to be used by the plant. Conservation measures include: turning off the faucet while brushing teeth, shaving or washing dishes... only run dishwashers and washing machines with full loads.
County Legislature approves new law enforcement education program for students about E-Bikes and E-Scooters...
A new program to educate school children about the rules... and laws of the road for E-Bikes and E-Scooters... will take place in Chautauqua County next Spring. A resolution establishing the program with the Sheriff's Office was approved unanimously by the legislature last week. The measure was sponsored by Jamestown Democrat Fred Larson... who says there have been many issues raised about the use of E-bikes and scooters in recent times. Larson says he wants to give most the "benefit of the doubt" when it comes to knowing or not knowing the rules of the road for such vehicles -- which have grown in popularity. In addition to all county school districts... Larson added the county's three BOCES centers to the program by way of an amendment. Fellow Jamestown Democrat Tom Nelson felt it was a good move... following a measure providing a 3-foot move-over area for those vehicles -- and regular pedel bikes -- to operate.
Leaf Collections in Jamestown gets underway today...
The first phase of the city of Jamestown's annual leaf collection program begins with Phase-One today. Acting Public Works Director Mark Roetzer says residents are asked to rake leaves to the terrace area behind the curb, not into the street, and have them ready for collection as crews approach their neighborhood. Roetzer says leaf piles must be free of trash, brush, branches, plastic bags, containers, and other debris. Piles containing these materials will not be collected. All basketball hoops must also be removed from the public right-of-way to allow collection crews to safely and efficiently complete their work. Roetzer says collection today begins in the Foote Ave. and Ivy St. area... and, will proceed west and north in a clockwise direction toward Washington St. Then... a week from today... collection on Nov. 9 will begin in the Foote Ave., Martin Rd, and Linwood Ave. area and proceed east and north in a counterclockwise direction toward the east side of Washington St. and the Fluvanna Ave. area. Weather conditions may for collection dates to be adjusted. Also during this time... residents may bring leaves, brush, branches, and garden debris to the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities Yard Waste Site, located at 1001 Monroe St.
