Upper part of vacant Jamestown home heavily damaged by fire...
Flames have destroyed the upper portions of a vacant home on Jamestown's northside.  City Fire Battalion Chief Ben McLaughlin says crews were called to the scene at 629 Prendergast Ave. shortly after 2 a.m., and, found flames coming from the attic through the roof of the two-story structure.  McLaughlin says firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control quickly... but, not before the roof was burned off.  An off-shift of seven was called... and, no injuries were reported.  Firefighters were at the scene about five hours.  The cause is under investigation.

Four fire companies respond to house fire just outside of Lakewood...
An early morning fire today has significantly damaged a home just west of the village of Lakewood.  Sheriff's Department dispatchers say Lakewood firefighters were called to the scene at 4381 West Fairmount Ave. in Busti about 5:30 a.m., and, were joined at the scene by Ashville, Busti and Celoron fire crews.  They were at the scene just over two-hours.  No injuries were reported... and the cause was under investigation.

City man arrested in Carroll following alleged altercation with person having an order of protection against him...
A man from Jamestown has been arrested in the town of Carroll for allegedly getting into an altercation with a person who had an order of protection against him.  Sheriff's officers say they were called to the scene on Carlberg Road about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.  Deputies say 26-year-old Jordan Beardsley got into the fight which violated the "stay-away" order.  Beardsley was charged with second-degree criminal contempt... second-degree aggravated harassment... and, second-degree harassment.  He was taken to the county jail pending centralized arraignment.  Ellicott Police and State Police assisted at the scene.

Man from Jamestown arrested for alleged domestic incident, struggle with police...
A domestic incident involving a man from Jamestown on the city's eastside has led to his arrest.  Jamestown police say they were called to the unidentified address shortly before 5 p.m. Monday for a reported dispute.  On arrival... officers were made aware of a stay-away order of protection against 27 year-old Darin Bates... who was found inside the victim’s home.  Following a brief struggle... police took Bates into custody for first-degree criminal contempt... and, resisting arrested.  He was held pending arraignment.

Paving done on East Second St. project, but, concrete and curbing work still pending...
The repaving portion of the total reconstruction of East Second Street in Jamestown is complete.  However... there is some sidewalk and curbing work yet to be completed.  First-Ward City Councilman Brent Sheldon recently asked for an update on the project being conducted by New York state that began earlier this year.  Acting Public Works Director Mark Roetzer says part of the delay on that work is because new traffic lights will be put in.  With school opening soon... Sheldon expressed concern because many people have been walking out onto the street to get where they're going.  He's hoping a lot of that work can be completed beforehand.  Roetzer says some of the delay has been caused because of not having enough concrete on order to complete all the jobs that are being done in the area.  He says the city DPW has even had trouble, and had to order concrete well in advance of using it.

Schumer, Gillibrand and Langworthy announce USDA will buy excess Concord Grapes up to $20-million...
Concord Grape growers in Western New York and Northwestern Pennsylvania has been extended a "life-line" by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.  That from U.S. Senator Charles Schumer of New York following his trip a week ago to the town of Portland to lobby the USDA to purchase excess grapes to help local growers in the wake of a major producer cancelling contracts with 126 regional growers.  Schumer now says USDA will purchase up to $20-million worth of the grapes.  He blasted Refresco for pulling the rug out from under growers who had already planted and were tending their crop pending the harvest.  Schumer says both he and New York's Junior Senator, Kirsten Gillibrand, this past week pressed the USDA to use funding already in the federal budget to purchase the excess Concord Grapes.  During the stop in Chautauqua County... Schumer said local growers would be hit with a "triple threat" if the action wasn't taken... including the contracts being cancelled, to rising costs for growers and market uncertainty.  Schumer and Gillibrand both called the grape purchases a "win-win" for all sides because the industry would be held up... and, the extra grapes will be used for domestic food assistance programs.

On the House side... Congressman Nick Langworthy praised the move after he says he pressed Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins to use the department’s authority to conduct a bonus purchase of surplus Concord grape juice to help stabilize the market and protect growers. 

Little Caesar's "Love Kitchen" coming to St. Susan's Center on Thursday...
A well-known pizza chain will be providing "free fresh" pizza at the Jamestown-area's largest soup kitchen this Thursday, Aug. 27.  Little Caesars has announced their "Love Kitchen" will be serving pizza from their nationally-recognized mobile food program at the St. Susan's Center that helps communities in need.  St. Susan's and Little Caesar's say the Love Kitchen truck will arrive at 11 a.m. at the Water Street location with meals to be served to about 325 individuals from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Any remaining food will be distributed to community members as needed.
