News Update for Fri., Jan. 24, 2014

Winter Weather Warning now issued for Chautauqua Co., and most of the rest of WNY...

Our roller coaster weather continues with today's early concerns about wind chill... and, that followed by a weather system that will bring strong winds and snow to the area later tonight into Saturday.  The National Weather Service has now issued a Winter Storm Warning from now to Saturday morning.  Forecaster Kirk Appfel in Buffalo says the weather system will move through area sometime overnight tonight.  Appfel says we won't have a lot of snow... but, there will be windy conditions, producing blustery, white-out conditions.  He says most areas will get 2 to 4 inches of snow, but up to 6 inches is possible over the higher terrain.  However... combined with sustained winds of 30 to 40 miles an hour... and, gusts to 55... will make conditions difficult.

Schumer at Jamestown Airport to announce push to keep facility in federal Essential Air Service program...

It's a technicality that could cost the Greater Chautauqua-Jamestown Regional Airport $1.9-million in federal funding.  That from U-S Senator Charles Schumer... who was at the airport -- just north of Jamestown -- late Friday morning to announce that he's pushing for a one-year waiver for the airport so it can receive money from the U-S Department of Transporation's Essential Air Service.  Schumer says 9.96 passengers flew out of the airport last year... but, the DOT is holding firm on it's requirement of 10.  The New York Democrat says the standards are "too rigid..." and, pledged his support for funding the state's smaller airports.  Schumer says these communities are dependant on these airports... especially business, and the general aviation public.  This past year... Schumer says the Jamestown airport was just 38 passengers short of the minimum threshold to qualify for Essential Air funding to help sustain passenger air service.  But... he says that wasn't because of a lack of demand... it was cancelled flights.  Schumer says that happened 52 times due to mechanical and other issues.
